GEORGE SOROS AND THE RISE OF THE NEO-CENTRICS,
By Walt Contreras Sheasby, Change Links, December 2003
"2003 has seen the rise of a new current in US politics, best described as NeoCentrics, or simply NeoCens, for ease of comparison with a better known defection of Socialists to the Conservative Right. Although allied with long-time social democrats (who were once distinguished by whether they accepted secret funding in bags from John A. McCone's office or Armand Hammer's office), the NeoCens are former radical critics of "lesser-evilism" who have decided a year before the 2004 election that the whiff of fascism is in the air. Funding for some of the Neo-Centrics comes from George Soros, who gives away $400m a year through his Foundation and thus subsidizes many of the activist groups, luminaries and publications of the American left, probably dwarfing the sums that once trickled out of Langley or Moscow. Soros does not control the left, as right-wingers imagine, but his monetary influence is one of those hushed secrets inside the left usually dismissed as conspiracy-thinking. He has given $60,000 to the Independent Media Institute, whose executive director, Don Hazen, is a former publisher of Mother Jones. A $50,000 grant went to the Nation Institute to support Radio Nation. KPFA received a $40,000 grant in 1995. A $35,000 grant went to American Prospect magazine. The list goes on and on. $150,000 has gone to the Feminist Majority Foundation, whose President, Eleanor Smeal, once broke with the Democrats and formed the 21st Century Party before endorsing Clinton. $75,000 went to Robert S. McIntyre’s Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, $50,000 to the Network for a Progressive Texas, $75,000 to the Economic Policy Institute, and even $200,000 to the prison reform group, Critical Resistance. Christian Parenti, a writer on the prison-industrial system and son of Michael Parenti, is a Senior Fellow at George Soros's Open Society Institute (named after a book by his fiercely anti-Marx mentor, Karl Popper), as are a number of other radicals. All his gifts to the radical left are penny ante compared to his high stakes, his dispensations to the liberal democrats, however. On Tuesday, Nov. 11 Soros told the Washington Post that the day before he had given five million dollars to MoveOn.org to benefit Howard Dean. He has donated more modest sums to other Democratic candidates and had already given 10 million dollars in August to "America Coming Together." ACT is one of the pseudo-parties created (often referred to as 527's, after their section of the new tax code) to get around the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law that made it illegal for Fat Cats to give huge sums directly to a political party. By refusing to adhere to the limit imposed by public funding, Dean is now free to accept large contributions through this loophole. At his home in Westchester, N.Y., Soros early on raised $115,000 from his friends for candidate Dean. According to the Washington Post, the Soros campaign for Dean began last summer with the help of Mort Halpern, a liberal think tank veteran. “Soros invited Democratic strategists to his house in Southampton, Long Island,” including Clinton chief of staff John D. Podesta, Clinton Advisors Jeremy Rosner and Robert Boorstin, and Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club. They discussed the coming election.” Standing on the back deck, “the evening sun angling into their eyes,” Soros took aside Steve Rosenthal, CEO of America Coming Together and former political director of the AFL-CIO, and Ellen Malcolm, its president and founder and donor of Emily’s List. After his announcement of the $10m, “They were ready to kiss me,” Soros quipped. Other Fat Cat guests followed his lead. Before coffee the next morning, his friend Peter Lewis, chairman of the Progressive Corp., had pledged $10 million to ACT. Rob Glaser, founder and CEO of RealNetworks, promised $2 million. Rob McKay, president of the McKay Family Foundation, gave $1 million and benefactors Lewis and Dorothy Cullman committed $500,000. Soros also promised up to $3 million to Podesta’s new think tank, the Center for American Progress. The Neo-Cen attack on Ralph Nader has been welcomed by unreconstructed social and liberal democrats who have long been critics of the Green Party and independent political action. Michael Tomasky, executive editor of the American Prospect, wrote a piece for the L.A. Times Book Review titled *A Lesson for the Left: Go to the Aid of the Party* on Nov. 9, 2003. He reviewed two books by radical intellectuals, G. William Domhoff’s Changing the Powers That Be: How the Left Can Stop Losing and Win, and James Weinstein's The Long Detour: The History and Future of the American Left. Both books are monuments to the new revisionism transforming the most trenchant critics of co-optation in the 1960s. Considered ultra-left then, they are masters of the back-flip in the new century ... George Soros would have a great deal of influence over a Dean-Clark Administration, but particularly so in the international context. For that vision to be achieved, the Neo-Centrics are needed to steer the former Nader voters and the independent left back into the Democratic Party. Soros is a past master at forging unlikely alliances, and the odds seem to be moving in his favor once again."

Separation of church and state? Yes, but no separation of yeshiva (Jewish religious school) and state.
Congress To Aid Lakewood Yeshiva,
By STEVEN I. WEISS, [Jewish] Forward, DECEMBER 19, 2003
"Congress is set to allocate $500,000 to Beth Medrash Govoha, known as the Lakewood yeshiva, for the establishment of a "Holocaust library." The grant was included in the 2004 Omnibus Appropriation Conference Agreement that is expected to be signed by President Bush later this month. According to congressional staffers, New Jersey's two senators, Democrats Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, inserted the money into the bill after being lobbied by Rabbi Aharon Kotler, brother of the yeshiva's foremost religious leader, Rabbi Aryeh Malkiel Kotler. The allocation comes as attention is focusing on a book written by Rabbi Saadya Grama, a graduate of the yeshiva, arguing that gentiles are "completely evil" and Jews constitute a separate, genetically superior species. The book included endorsements from several of the top rabbis at the Lakewood yeshiva ... . The request for federal aid sent by Aharon Kotler to the senators requested funds for "Holocaust Memorial Libraries." "Beth Medrash Govoha's Holocaust Memorial Libraries will replace the institution's famous collections of books and manuscripts that were destroyed in the Holocaust," Kotler wrote ... Binyamin Speigel, the yeshiva's head librarian, said he could not provide details regarding the library. "We don't have a Holocaust library. It's in future plans," he told the Forward. Asked to provide more details, Speigel responded: "We don't have exact plans."

$10 Million Israel Bond Purchased,
By Stephanie Spinks, New Mexico Jewish
"The New Mexico Jewish Link Governor Bill Richardson made a commitment at the New Mexico-Israel Dinner of State on June 24 that New Mexico would purchase an Israel Bond. This commitment was honored when the governor’s office recently announced the purchase of a $10 million Israel Bond. It is the first time that New Mexico has ever invested in the State of Israel. A ceremony with Richardson presenting New Mexico Israel Bonds Chairman Harold Albert with a symbolic check to mark the purchase took place on Wednesday, Nov. 12. “The Israel Bonds office in New York is now responsible for finalizing the transaction,” Albert said. “The purchase demonstrates New Mexico’s commitment to strengthen Israel’s economy at this critical moment in its history,” said Joshua Matza, president and CEO of Israel Bonds. The 2003 New Mexico campaign for Israel Bonds was “an unprecedented success,” said Albert. He commented that this was a year of firsts for the Israel Bonds campaign in New Mexico. He listed them as: the largest Israel Bonds event in the history of New Mexico on June 24 with over 400 guests attending; the first time Israel Bonds in New Mexico honored two different individuals at the same event, Rabbi Joe Black and Governor Bill Richardson; the first time a New Mexico Bonds event sold over $350,000 — this year’s event sold over $800,000; the first time a New Mexico Bonds event had 100 committee members; and the first time ever that the State of New Mexico invested in Israel Bonds. By purchasing this $10 million Israel Bond, New Mexico joins two other states, New Jersey ($20 million) and Indiana ($5 million) as first time investors this year. Twenty-two states have now invested in Israel Bonds. Israel has sold almost $800 million to State and Municipal Pension funds since 1978. Some States hold between $50 million and $100 million in their portfolios."

Shevardnadze accuses Soros of organising a coup d'etat in Georgia,
Pravda (Russia), December 1, 2003
"Former President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze has accused American financier George Soros of organising the events that led to the coup d'etat in that Caucasian republic. "This is his plan," said Shevardnadze in the "News of the Week" programme on the Rossia TV channel. According to him, Soros has formulated "a whole concept how to hold elections so that new people come to the government, and how to found such organisations as in Yugoslavia." "This is the plan of Soros. He provided for everything: how much money is necessary, what government organisations are reliable, with whom it is necessary to cooperate," said he. Shevardnadze reminded the audience that one of the American organisations got access to the lists of the constituents compiled by the municipal authorities of Georgia. After that many names disappeared from the lists, said the ex-President. "You have driven him (Soros) away from Russia, and you were right. His behaviour is not good. He should not poke his nose into politics in general," he added."

For some cadets at West Point, Jewish life is shelter in a storm,
By Peter Ephross, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, December 4, 2003
"Jewish life appears to be alive and well among the 80 or so Jewish cadets currently enrolled at the hilly campus beside the Hudson River. “It’s a really close-knit group. They’re my closest friends,” Megan Williams, West Point’s Hillel student representative, says of the other Jewish cadets. That friendship can be crucial for cadets at West Point, where the roughly 4,000 students who make it through four grueling years receive a free education in exchange for at least five years of post-graduate service in the army ... [W]hile becoming a U.S. military officer is no shame, it’s not the career most Jewish parents envision for their children. Jacob Bergman found that out when he informed his Israeli parents of his plans to attend the military academy. “When I said I was going to West Point, they were like, ‘What?!’" Bergman recalls ... Bergman’s years at West Point haven’t just educated him and taught him leadership and military skills — ranging from fieldwork in weapons training and hand-to-hand combat, to classes in military strategy and ethics — they’ve also made him feel more Jewish. It started the summer before his first, or plebe, year. Known as Beast, cadet basic training is “five weeks of all the things you’ve seen in movies: sudden-death haircuts, buckle-shining, wall-jumping, scrambling cadets looking perplexed,” writes David Lipsky, author of “Absolutely American,” a recent book on West Point. One of Bergman’s older friends told him to ask for permission to participate in prayer services on Friday nights during Beast. “No matter how scared you are during basic training, tell them you want to go to services on Friday nights,” Bergman remembers his friend saying. Bergman did and his commanders complied, allowing him and the other Jewish cadets to attend services at the school’s Jewish chapel ... The most famous of the Jewish graduates, David “Mickey” Marcus, is known for parachuting into Normandy on D-Day and then helping convert the Haganah into a regular army during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. He was killed in the 1948 war by friendly fire. Like Jewish students at other colleges, West Point cadets celebrate the Jewish holidays on campus, and they mark Holocaust Remembrance Day ... The military does its part for soldiers in the field, providing kosher MREs — meals ready to eat — for those who want them. There’s also a Jewish choir at the academy that is about two-thirds Jewish and performs songs such as “Ani Ma’amin” and “Jerusalem of Gold” alongside old military standards at synagogues and college campuses."

In Rumsfeld’s Shop. A senior Air Force officer watches as the neocons consolidate their Pentagon coup,
By Karen Kwiatkowski, American Conservative, December 1, 2003
"Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski recently retired from the U.S. Air Force. Her final posting was as an analyst at the Pentagon. Below is the first of three installments describing her experience there ... There was a position in [the Pentagon's] Near East South Asia (NESA) that they needed to fill right away. I wasn’t interested. They phrased the question another way: “We have been tasked to send a body over to Bill Luti. Can we send you?” I resisted—until I slowly guessed that in true bureaucratic fashion and can-do military tradition my name had already been sent over ... Then we stepped in to meet Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Bill Luti. I knew Luti had a Ph.D. in international relations from the Fletcher School at Tufts and was a recently retired Navy Captain himself. At this point, I didn’t know what a neocon was or that they had already swarmed over the Pentagon, populating various hives of policy and planning like African hybrids, with the same kind of sting reflex. Luti just seemed happy to have me there as a warm body. My second omen was the super-size bottles of Tums and Tylenol Joe left in his desk. The third occurred as I was chatting with my new office mate, a career civil servant working the Egypt desk. As the conversation moved into Middle East news and politics, she mentioned that if I wanted to be successful here, I shouldn’t say anything positive about the Palestinians. In 19 years of military service, I had never heard such a politically laden warning on such an obscure topic to such an inconsequential player. I had the sense of a single click, the sound tectonic plates might make as they shift deep under the earth and lock into a new resting position—or when the trigger is pulled in a game of Russian roulette. I had never worked for neocons before, and the philosophical journey to understand what they stood for was not a trip I wanted to take. But my conversations with coworkers and some of the people I was meeting in the office opened my eyes to something strange and fascinating. Those who had watched the transition from Clintonista to Bushite knew that something calculated had happened to NESA. Key personnel, long-time civilian professionals holding the important billets, had been replaced early in the transition ... To remove that continuity factor seemed contraindicated, but at the time, I didn’t realize that the expertise on Middle East policy was being brought in from a variety of outside think tanks. Another civilian replacement about which I was told was that of the long-time Israel/Syria/Lebanon desk, Larry Hanauer. Word was that he was even-handed with Israel, there had been complaints from one of his countries, and as a gesture of good will, David Schenker, fresh from the Washington Institute, was serving as the new Israel/Syria/Lebanon desk. I came to share with many NESA colleagues a kind of unease, a sense that something was awry. What seemed out of place was the strong and open pro-Israel and anti-Arab orientation in an ostensibly apolitical policy-generation staff within the Pentagon. There was a sense that politics like these might play better at the State Department or the National Security Council, not the Pentagon, where we considered ourselves objective and hard boiled ... By August, I was morally and intellectually frustrated by my powerlessness against what increasingly appeared to be a philosophical hijacking of the Pentagon. Indeed, I had sworn an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, but perhaps we were never really expected to take it all that seriously."

Another classic "anti-Semitic canard": Jewish money finances revolution.
Georgia revolt carried mark of Soros,
By MARK MacKINNON, Globe and Mail, November 26, 2003
"It was back in February that billionaire financier George Soros began laying the brickwork for the toppling of Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. That month, funds from his Open Society Institute sent a 31-year-old Tbilisi activist named Giga Bokeria to Serbia to meet with members of the Otpor (Resistance) movement and learn how they used street demonstrations to topple dictator Slobodan Milosevic. Then, in the summer, Mr. Soros's foundation paid for a return trip to Georgia by Otpor activists, who ran three-day courses teaching more than 1,000 students how to stage a peaceful revolution. Last weekend, the Liberty Institute that Mr. Bokeria helped found was instrumental in organizing the street protests that eventually forced Mr. Shevardnadze to sign his resignation papers. Mr. Bokeria says it was in Belgrade that he learned the value of seizing and holding the moral high ground, and how to make use of public pressure — tactics that proved so persuasive on the streets of Tbilisi after this month's tainted parliamentary election. In Tbilisi, the Otpor link is seen as just one of several instances in which Mr. Soros gave the anti-Shevardnadze movement a considerable nudge: He also funded a popular opposition television station that was crucial in mobilizing support for this week's "velvet revolution," and he reportedly gave financial support to a youth group that led the street protests. He also has a warm relationship with Mr. Shevardnadze's chief opponent, Mikhail Saakashvili, a New York-educated lawyer who is expected to win the presidency in an election scheduled for Jan. 4. Last year, Mr. Soros personally presented Mr. Saakashvili with the foundation's Open Society Award. "It's generally accepted public opinion here that Mr. Soros is the person who planned Shevardnadze's overthrow," said Zaza Gachechiladze, editor-in-chief of The Georgian Messenger, an English-language daily based in the capital. In the eyes of Mr. Soros's employees, it was all done in the name of building democracy. Laura Silber, a senior policy adviser at Open Society, said the foundation sponsored the exchange because "some of the experiences are very translatable" between Georgia and Serbia. In Georgia's current political climate, she said, "it looks more charged than it is." That's not how Mr. Shevardnadze saw it, however. "George Soros is set against the President of Georgia," he said during a news conference in Tbilisi a week before his resignation — it was at least the third time during the protests that he had complained about Mr. Soros. He threatened to shut down Open Society's Georgia offices, saying it was not Mr. Soros's business "to get involved in the political processes." Mr. Bokeria, whose Liberty Institute received money from both Open Society and the U.S. government-backed Eurasia Institute, says three other organizations played key roles in Mr. Shevardnadze's downfall: Mr. Saakashvili's National Movement party, the Rustavi-2 television station and Kmara! (Georgian for Enough!), a youth group that declared war on Mr. Shevardnadze last April and began a poster and graffiti campaign attacking government corruption. All three have ties to Mr. Soros. ... In mid-2002, Mr. Shevardnadze made his first of many complaints about Mr. Soros's political interference in the country, and shortly afterward, more than a dozen young people stormed the offices of Mr. Bokeria's Liberty Institute, smashing computers and beating up several members of the staff. Mr. Soros responded by suggesting during a news conference in Moscow that Mr. Shevardnadze's government could not be trusted to hold a proper parliamentary election in 2003 .. Mr. Soros's money and seeming good intentions were initially welcomed in former Soviet states when Open Society moved in after the fall of the Iron Curtain, but some of those relationships have since broken down. Ukraine and Belarus expelled Open Society, accusing the organization of political interference, and the foundation's offices in Moscow were raided recently by masked gunmen over an apparent real-estate dispute. Mr. Soros, whose large-scale currency market interventions have been blamed by some for the 1997 currency crisis in Southeast Asia, has said that his next goal is making sure U.S. President George W. Bush does not win re-election."

JEWS RIP KERRY'S MIDDLE EAST PLAN,
By STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN and DEBORAH ORIN, New York Post, Decmber 4, 2003
"Presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry set off a firestorm among Jewish leaders yesterday by saying Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton or former Secretary of State James Baker could be used as a special envoy to the Middle East in the Massachusetts senator's administration. Kerry's comments - made during what was billed as a major foreign-policy speech at the Council on Foreign Relations - were met with light applause at the event. But the proposal sparked shock and anger in the Jewish community, especially in view of former President Carter's perceived anti-Israel stance at the latest "peace summit" in Geneva. "I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. None of those three would be on my list," said Abe Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "Two are biased on the side of the Arabs - Carter and Baker - and Clinton tried and failed, so why would we use him again?" Clinton sought to craft a comprehensive Mideast peace deal in his final months as president, but failed. Israel's current government says it would never offer as many concessions to Palestinians as Clinton proposed. Carter over the years has been increasingly critical of Israel, and said at the Geneva conference that the inability to resolve the Mideast conflict helps foster terrorism. Baker was secretary of state under President Bush's dad, and was widely seen as tilting anti-Israel. Another prominent Jewish leader said,: "What is [Kerry] trying to do - commit suicide? It's at best naive and ignorant. Remarks like this are why more Jews are considering voting for Bush." Jews are among the most loyal Democrats, but Republicans believe they are making significant inroads among Jewish voters because of the president's strong support for Israel. Betty Ehrenberg, international-affairs director of the Orthodox Union, said, "Many in our community view Mr. Baker and Mr. Carter as tilting toward the Palestinians."

Candidates' Representatives Discuss Jewish Vote, Middle East,
By ERIC MARX, FORWARD, December 5, 2003
"Representatives for seven of the nine Democratic presidential candidates squared off this week on issues of importance to the Jewish community, ranging from health care and abortion to Israel and the war on terrorism. The "Democratic Presidential Insider Roundtable," sponsored by the New York chapter of the National Jewish Democratic Council, was held on Tuesday evening at the Makor/Steinhardt Center Lecture Hall in Manhattan, and was moderated by the Forward's political reporter, E. J. Kessler. With a slew of undecided Jewish democratic voters facing them, and with New York State's Democratic presidential primary less than four months away, each liaison made the case for why his candidate represented what is best for the Jewish community. Noting that the New York Jewish vote constitutes about 20% of the turnout statewide, and can constitute a full quarter of the vote in New York City, Kessler began by asking the candidate representatives how they would appeal to Jewish voters ... Seeking to undo missteps early in the campaign by his candidate Howard Dean, Matt Dorf, reaffirmed his candidate's commitment to a secure Israel but said he could not support the current plans for the security fence put forward by the Israeli government. Representative Dick Gephardt's liaison similarly hedged full support for the fence, saying he saw the need for Israelis to defend themselves against terrorist attack but that the fence should be only a temporary measure. Joseph Lieberman's representative backhandedly rejected the Geneva Initiative, saying face-to-face negotiations between the elected government of Israel and a responsible Palestinian leadership are the only way to broker a peace deal, while General Wesley Clark's representative noted that the Palestinians are too weak and suggested that a deal would remain elusive until the Syrians, Jordanians and Egyptians saw peace in their own self-interest ... The discussion of Israel's security quickly led into a heated debate over the war on terror and Iraq, and the positions taken by the various candidates."

Jewish Couple Decry Discharge From Army Jewish. Couple Say They Were Discharged From Army Because They Observed Yom Kippur Holiday,
ABC News, December 5, 2003
"Refael and Margaret Chaiken were supposed to be seven months into a five-year Army commitment by now, studying to be much-needed interrogators in the war on terrorism. Instead they are civilians looking for jobs. The two were discharged after disobeying orders by skipping class so they could attend services for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. "Our religion itself says if you are saving somebody's life, you have to (cease the observance)," Refael Chaiken said. "No one can convince us not going to class, when you can make it up, falls under that category." The Army calls the Nov. 14 discharges a simple matter. "They didn't meet the requirements of the course," said Tanja Linton, a spokeswoman at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., where the Chaikens were training. "You have to meet the requirements of the course. We really just don't see the story here." She said the Army acted within its regulation on religious practices, which says it will accomodate religious practices "unless accommodation will have an adverse impact on unit readiness, individual readiness, unit cohesion, morale, discipline, safety, and/or health" ... The Chaikens said their problems began on Oct. 4, two days before the holiday, when Battalion Commander Dennis Perkins told them not to attend all-day services. They said they were told to go to class as scheduled, but could go to services after class. That meant nothing, Refael Chaiken said, because classes lasted so long. So the couple skipped class and attended a service at the fort's chapel. Refael Chaiken, 27, knew there would be consequences when they returned. "They gave us a counseling statement and read us our rights, accused us of being AWOL and willful disobedience of a lawful order," said Chaiken, a veteran of the Israeli army who holds dual citizenship ... Refael Chaiken still wants to employ his Arabic and Hebrew language skills honed growing up in Hebron since 1984 but believes he'll need an honorable discharge to have a chance at U.S. government work. "With a discharge like this it's going to be very hard to get a job with a three-letter agency like the CIA or FBI," he said."

State Department Official Says Anti-Semitism Attacks Foundations of Civilization,
Truth News, December 4, 2003
"Anti-Semitism is not just an attack against the Jewish people, "it is an attack on the foundations of civilized society itself," said Under Secretary of State Marc Grossman, addressing the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research at the State Department December 3. "Political leadership must speak out. We shall not rest until anti-Semitism ends up with the other discredited -- ‘isms'," he said, having cited numerous examples of anti-Semitic statements and violence in contemporary Europe and the United States. The international task force has grown to 16 member countries since its founding in 1998, Grossman noted, and education is at the heart of the group's work, because education "has always been the best antidote to ignorance and hatred." "Through education, remembrance and research," he said, the task force has "helped preserve the memory of the millions of Holocaust victims so that we may never forget." Through its support of academic work, documentary films, and other projects, it also seeks "to help all of us fathom the unfathomable, the great evil of the 20th Century that was the Holocaust -- so that -- Never Again is not only a wish, but an unwavering objective not just of our policies but of our lives."

Kissinger-Argentine Junta Talks Detailed,
by Kevin Gray, Yahoo! News (from Associated Press) December 4, 2003
"Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger lent verbal support to Argentina's military junta, which had been cracking down on dissidents, according to newly declassified documents obtained by a U.S. watchdog group. "We would like you to succeed," Kissinger told Argentine Foreign Minister Adm. Cesar Augusto Guzzetti during a meeting in New York Oct. 7, 1976, according to the U.S. government records. His comments were revealed in papers obtained and released Thursday by the National Security Archives, an independent Washington-based group that monitors Freedom of Information Act issues. Kissinger did not immediately respond to calls for comment from The Associated Press. But he has repeatedly denied ever condoning human rights abuses. He has increasingly faced criticism for U.S. backing of authoritarian governments in Latin America and Southeast Asia as part of Washington's bid at the time to contain the spread of communism. In the seven-page transcript marked "secret", Kissinger is quoted as telling Guzzetti that human rights issues were growing in Argentina. According to the document, he offers support, nonetheless, to the military rulers who seized power in a coup in March 1976. "Look, our basic attitude is that we would like you to succeed," Kissinger said, according to the documents, first reported by The Miami Herald. "I have an old-fashioned view that friends ought to be supported. The quicker you succeed, the better." The Argentine military launched its systematic crackdown on leftists groups in March 1976, beginning six years of iron-fisted rule that saw 8,900 people disappear, according to a government report. Human rights groups put the number at around 30,000. Last year, declassified State Department documents suggested junta officials increasingly believed Washington was willing to overlook their methods to contain political dissent."

The Jewish Problem in America,
by John Anast, Al-Jazeerah Info, December 5, 2003
"The Jewish problem in America has never been more clear and it is a problem for both Jews and non-Jews alike. Jewish Americans have to speak out more forcefully against racist Zionism on the one hand and the ridiculous notion of a "master race" on the other. If American Jews are unwilling to do so, then they are not loyal Americans but loyal instead to a racist apartheid political movement. For most Jews in America, the US is the land of their birth but for some strange reason many cling to and provide support for some notion of a Jewish State. The "Holocaust" industry, which seems to forget about the many poor needy survivors of WWII concentration camps, is not for the benefit of non-Jews but merely to serve as a fund raising tool of the Zionists and more starkly as a political statement against all non-Jews. One cannot serve two masters or have "dual" loyalty. Zionism is not Torah and Israel is not Yshrael. What perhaps many do not realize is that Palestine was not the first choice for the creation of blasphemous Israel, in fact other sites were considered including the territory of modern day Uganda. Palestine was finally picked because it was thought amongst the atheist/satanic Zionists that Jews would provide more money worldwide if Israel were created in Palestine. The sleeping American public never dreamed or understood and to a large extent remains unaware of the treachery which is perpetrated against them every day. From the shadows and in back rooms, Zionists hatch their schemes in many cases without attribution for fear the American public might one day awaken to their treachery. In rare occasions like in the recent Zionist controlled New York Post, an article was written intended to send shivers up the spine of John Kerry. Whereas, Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) leveled his own brand of defamation against two former US Presidents and one former US Secretary of State. This is a prime example of the Jewish problem in America. Mr. Foxman alleges that somehow Mr. Kerry is unqualified or somehow stupid to suggest that either of Messrs. Carter, Clinton, or Baker be appointed as Middle East envoy to reach a peaceful resolution in Palestine. The truth of the matter is that any of those three gentlemen is eminently more qualified and eminently more capable than Mr. Foxman could ever dream of being. There are many more issues more important to loyal Americans and America, but apparently not to Mr. Foxman or to the ADL and its benefactor Israel. I am sure that issues of Iraq and bringing the troops home, healthcare, health insurance, property taxes, the deficit, et cetera are more important issues to Americans than the single issue which seems to fixate Mr. Foxman -- Israel, a foreign country. The exact Foxman quote form the New York Post was "I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. None of those three would be on my list." How outrageous that anyone and especially a Zionist would have the chutzpah to criticize two former American Presidents and a former US Secretary of State. It is clear that the ADL does not speak for America but for Israel. The article in the New York Post went on to describe former President Carter as "anti-Israel." Why? Because Mr. Carter actually had the audacity to take a "stance" for peace. To quote from the article "... It sparked shock and anger in the Jewish community…" Says who? Anyone who talks about a peaceful resolution in Palestine is somehow considered pro-Palestinian. The truth be told peace in Palestine was possible 30 years ago, but Zionists and other racists in Israel and the United States have done everything possible to prevent peace as a possible outcome. A so-called "prominent Jewish leader" was quoted in the New York Post article as saying "What is [Kerry] trying to do - commit suicide? It's at best naive and ignorant. Remarks like this are why more Jews are considering voting for Bush." While a vast majority of American Jews will still vote for the democratic candidate in the next election, evidenced by most of my Jewish neighbors asking me not to vote for Bush again, the bigger story is that Zionists continue to make attempts to distort the election process in America and continue to show their contempt for any peaceful resolution in Palestine. As for Mr. Foxman, he is in no position to criticize any former US president or even Mr. Kerry for that matter. Mr. Kerry who has spent a lifetime in Washington, to his credit seems to wish to ignore or modify the unofficial policy of the United States with regard to Palestine. It is mostly an unwritten Zionist driven policy and was in place since the Johnson administration ... The same people who own the money in your pocket (which is not the US Government) and the Lansky Jewish mafia were and are the money behind the Israel dream and the goal of rebuilding the satanic inspired third temple ... There is little doubt that Mr. Kissinger was a Zionist mole in the White House and that there were others as well. Speculation in the United States is that Mr. Kissinger was the notorious "deep throat" in the White House who turned on President Nixon to protect Israel and its spy network in America. The US had compiled information on many prominent Jews with regard to espionage activities on behalf of Israel and had more than a few telephones tapped. In those days many of the cadres of the Israeli spy network were tipped off to the taps and relied upon personal gatherings, Synagogues, restaurants, et cetera to meet ... Racist apartheid Israel is a foreign country and if Zionists feel some special bond to Israel they should move there and not remain in our midst in America. It's time to make Washington and the rest of America a Zionist-free territory. It is also time to enforce UN Resolutions against Israel and remove Israel's Weapons of Mass Destruction "WMD" -- we know where those WMD are located and they are not in Iraq. Every person who calls themselves a Christian or a Muslim must take heed and look closely at Palestine and realize "through a looking glass darkly" it is a warning that the way in which the Zionists treat the Palestinians is in fact the same way they will treat you if you allow it."

There's method in the madness of King George,
By DOUG SAUNDERS, Globe and Mail, November 29, 2003
"George Soros has never been shy about his desire to play God. "Power is intoxicating, and I have gained more power than I have ever thought possible," he wrote in 1989, when he was nothing more than one of the richest men in the world, before the adjective "secretive" got traded for "outspoken," and a few months before he became known for using that money repeatedly to finance the overthrow of governments. That power needed an outlet, and grand narcissism or mere charity wasn't going to do it. "I was a confirmed egoist," he confessed, "but I considered the pursuit of self-interest as too narrow a base for my rather inflated self! If truth be known, I carried some rather potent messianic fantasies with me." He wanted to spend all of his tens of billions, and he wanted to spend it transforming entire societies. "Doing good may be noble," he wrote, "but fighting evil can be fun." Those words carry a new weight this week in the nation of Georgia, where liberal-democratic activists financed and trained by Mr. Soros's Open Society Foundation managed to overthrow the government of Eduard Shevardnadze. And they are beginning to carry a lot of weight in the United States, where Mr. Soros has vowed to do pretty much the same thing next year. Those messianic words appeared in a very strange little book that I picked up in 1989, titled Opening the Soviet System. Mr. Soros had published a couple books and numerous essays before, but they had mostly involved the mechanics of earning billions and billions of dollars through highly risky speculative investments. People who bought those books hoping to pick up investment tips were usually surprised to discover long chapters on the nature of consciousness and the limitations of knowledge. Most people skipped over those chapters. Mr. Soros remained undaunted, and placed a slightly expanded version of them in his book about the Soviet Union. Every year or two since then, he has published a weighty book of political and philosophical theory, made a few more billions, and spent money helping people get rid of their unpleasant governments: In the Soviet Union, in Poland and Hungary and Czechoslovakia, in Serbia, now in Georgia, soon in the United States. It is quite a life. As a result, conspiracy theories tend to stick to Mr. Soros like flies. Every Soros Foundation political move, in Asia, South America or Eastern Europe, has carried some hint that he has somehow found a way to make money by pulling the political levers, much as he made $2-billion one week in 1992 by cornering the market in the British pound. A world-class capitalist must have some global-scale plan to make even more money, right?"

Passing the Sanctions Bill. US Congress Does Israel's Bidding, Again,
By MARK GAFFNEY, CounterPunch, November 29-30, 2003
"On October 16 a Muslim leader, Mahathir Mohammed, delivered the keynote address before an all-Islamic Summit Conference in Malaysia. In his speech Mahathir called for Muslim unity. He condemned terrorism. And he urged the Muslim world to focus on cultural and economic development. All in all, the tone of the speech -- and I read the text -- was remarkably restrained, given the recent US attack on Iraq and Israel's continuing brutal treatment of the Palestinians. Yet, the reaction of the western press was to excoriate Mahathir for making anti-semitic remarks, for example, his claim that Israel finds proxies to do its bidding. Mahathir deserves criticism for several of his statements. But his claim that Israel relies on others to do its bidding was an apt description of the present US-Israel relationship. Within the context of its larger strategy of world domination, the US is now assisting Israel to achieve its goal of regional hegemony in the Mid East. This is reflected in current US policy toward Syria and Iran, which bears a striking resemblance to the priorities of Israel's hard-line prime minister, Ariel Sharon. Consider the evidence. On October 15 the US House passed a bill that would impose a variety of sanctions on Syria. The vote was overwhelming: 398-4. On November 11 the US Senate passed a nearly identical bill by a similarly lopsided margin, 89-4. The final wording will give President Bush considerable leeway to impose a wide range of sanctions against the Assad regime in Damascus. Members of Congress described the bill as necessary to punish Syria for allowing infiltration across the border into Iraq, for pursuing weapons of mass destruction (notice, the same charge leveled against Saddam Hussein), and because of Syria's military adventures in Lebanon and its support of terrorism. The problem with these stated reasons is that they fail to withstand closer scrutiny. On October 29 the Washington Post ran a follow up story about alleged infiltration across Syria's 300-mile border with Iraq. The Post interviewed US military commanders with the 101st Airborne Division, guarding the northern portion of the frontier, and officers with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, currently watching the southern part of the line. The US commanders flatly denied that any significant infiltration was occurring across the border into Iraq ... If nothing of any consequence is getting through to trouble US forces in Iraq, why did members of Congress cite border infiltration to justify the sanctions bill? This brings me to the second stated reason, Syria's alleged pursuit of weapo ns of mass destruction. It's no secret, the world has known for many years, that Syria has chemical weapons mounted on an aging Soviet era missile force. All very true. The problem is that no one in the House bothered to mention that Syria's decrepit missiles are its deterrent, markedly inferior I should add, to its neighbor Israel's larger and vastly more advanced arsenal of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The current balance of military power between the two states is weighted so heavily in favor of Israel that to cite Syria's weaker deterrent as a justification for sanctions is almost laughable. The fact that Israel's weapons of mass destruction were never mentioned in the discussion about the sanctions bill must have perplexed the many inhabitants of the Mid East who follow US politics more closely than do most Americans, and who live with the constant threat of their presence. But let us now consider the third stated reason for the sanctions bill, namely, Syria's military occupation of Lebanon, and terrorism. The problem with this should have been obvious to anyone who follows the news. Ten days prior to the House vote Israeli war planes bombed a site near Damascus. It was a flagrant act of war, an attack deep inside Syria, something Israel had not done for thirty years. Of course, the US media did not portray the attack as terrorism. Whatever we do (and this includes our ally Israel) is not terrorism, but counter-terrorism. To the people on the ground in Syria who were bombed, of course, the attack was surely viewed as Israeli terrorism ... Mahathir Mohammed had it exactly right. The US is currently doing Israel's bidding in the Mid East. Nor is the policy solely that of the conservative Bush administration. The overwhelming votes in the House and Senate show just how deep the support for Ariel Sharon is in Congress."

Graham regrets Jewish slur. Billy Graham has "spent his life building bridges",
BBC (UK), March 2, 2002
"The Reverend Billy Graham has apologised for a taped conversation with former President Nixon in which he said the Jewish "stranglehold" of the media was ruining the United States and must be broken. ["This stranglehold has got to be broken or this country's going down the drain" -- Billy Graham to Richard Nixon] The remarks came in 500 hours of tapes Nixon had secretly recorded during the first six months of 1972 which have now been released by the US National Archives. "Although I have no memory of the occasion, I deeply regret comments I apparently made in an Oval Office conversation with President Nixon some 30 years ago," Mr Graham said in a statement released by his Texas public relations firm. Nixon had hundreds of conversations taped. "They do not reflect my views and I sincerely apologise for any offence caused by the remarks," he said, adding that he had spent his life building bridges between Jews and Christians. In the taped conversation, Mr Graham said the Jewish "stranglehold" on the media "has got to be broken or this country's going down the drain". "You believe that?" Nixon replies. "Yes, sir." "Oh boy. So do I. I can't ever say that but I believe it," Nixon says. "If you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something," Mr Graham replies. A lot of Jews are great friends of mine, but they don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country." Later in the conversation, when Nixon raises the subject of Jewish influence in Hollywood, Mr Graham says: "A lot of Jews are great friends of mine. They swarm around me and are friendly to me, because they know that I am friendly to Israel and so forth, but they don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country, and I have no power and no way to handle them." Nixon, who became friends with Mr Graham in the 1950s during his time as vice president in the Eisenhower administration, then advises: "You must not let them know."

Company fined $6,000 for not reporting customer's question: "Is any of this stuff made in Israel?",
by Helen & Harry Highwater, Unknown News, June 27, 2003
"A Missouri company has been fined $6,000 for not reporting a customer's question to the federal government. The question that's punished by law is: Are any of these products made in Israel, or made of Israeli materials? The Kansas City Star reports: The anti-boycott provisions bar U.S. companies from providing information about their business relationships with Israel. They also require that receipt of boycott requests be reported to the Bureau of Industry and Security, formerly known as the Bureau of Export Administration. We ask: Why is this question forbidden? Why is any question forbidden? It sounds more like the USSR than the USA, to punish people for asking a forbidden question, or for not immediately reporting to the government that someone else asked a forbidden question. Only a few years ago, during South Africa's apartheid era, it was considered the height of good moral backbone to ask whether a product came from that country. Today, many Americans are asking such questions about products they suspect came from France, after the French government declined to join "Operation Iraqi Freedom" ...And here's a press release from the US Department of Commerce: "Commerce Under Secretary for Industry and Security Kenneth I. Juster today reiterated to U.S. companies that the Department will vigorously enforce its regulations prohibiting U.S. persons from taking any action in support of foreign government boycotts against Israel. ..." If K-Mart is having a sale on cheap plastic chess sets and we ask the clerk whether the board or pieces were made in Israel, is the clerk allowed to answer? Must the store promptly file a form with the Bureau of Industry and Security reporting that we asked? Well, we'll be asking the forbidden question in every store we enter. Not because we're boycotting Israel — we're not. Heck, if we were boycotting products from countries whose policies are abhorrent, we'd start by boycotting anything marked "made in USA." We'll be asking the forbidden question because we believe in freedom. In a free society, the government doesn't tell people what questions they can ask, and what questions they can't, and what questions must be promptly reported to the authorities. We had heard of this law before — banning people from even asking about boycotting Israeli products — but we had foolishly assumed it wasn't often enforced. According to the article, though, "more than $26 million in fines" have been levied for violations of this law, suggesting that enforcement of the Forbidden Question Law is not at all uncommon. The fine in this case was $6,000, so assuming that's average and doing the math, more than 4,000 Americans or American companies have been fined — for asking the forbidden question, or failure to report that someone else asked the forbidden question."

Cotler not afraid to speak his mind, Lawyer backed anti-terrorism bill. Says he'll promote human rights,
by TONDA MACCHARLES, Toronto Star, Dec. 13, 2003
"The first thing you need to know about the new Justice Minister Irwin Cotler — renowned human rights scholar and advocate — is he will speak his mind. The second thing you need to know about Cotler, the law professor, is that he loves lists. So the first thing on his list yesterday was to meet with his new justice officials, but not before he spoke his mind about his new job. And that's where things got interesting. Cotler, 63, told reporters he personally supports the marijuana decriminalization bill, a public inquiry into the Maher Arar case, and believes the same-sex marriage reference to the Supreme Court of Canada should be broadened to ask the high court to review all options including whether "civil unions" would meet the requirements of equality guaranteed in the Charter. "As a law professor my view was that in the context of a reference, then the broadest possible options should be put before the court to allow for the broadest possible discussion and debate, and to allow for the most comprehensive and informed advisory opinion" ... The appointment of Yale-educated Cotler, a Jewish Montrealer and a former head of the Canadian Jewish Congress, as the country's leading lawmaker is at once a thoughtful, daring move, yet perhaps a risky one. John Asfour, past president of the Canadian Arab Federation, said Cotler's pro-Israel comments could get in the way of his job as justice minister, reported Canadian Press. "Mr. Cotler and some of the Jewish lobby have supported (Israel) blindly," Asfour said in an interview ... Cotler's credibility as a human rights expert was a trump card in the push to persuade a suspicious Canadian public of the merits of the controversial new Anti-Terrorism Act, C-36."

Prime Minister Paul Martin's Cabinet,
Canadian Jewish Congress, December 12, 2003
"The Cabinet represents enormous change with 20 new members, 2 returning to Cabinet from previous Ministries and almost a dozen incumbent members switching portfolios. Prime Minister Martin has created the new ministries of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (moving responsibility for CSIS and the RCMP from the Solicitor General), Social Development, Human Resources and Skills Development and several new Ministries of State with particular areas of focus. International Trade has been hived off Foreign Affairs. Here are the results for Jewish Cabinet Ministers:
Senator Jack Austin becomes Leader of the Government in the Senate
Irwin Cotler
(Mount Royal) becomes Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada
Jacques Saada
(Brossard-La Prairie) becomes Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister responsible for Democratic Reform
... THE ISSUES Here are the key issues that CJC has on its agenda within the CIJA policy envelope with the major Cabinet departments. Canadian Heritage: Hon. Hélène Scherrer (Louis Hébert) Ensuring that antisemitism is a priority item in the continuing battle against all forms of racism Emphasis on maintaining civil discourse in the face of international instability (sponsorship of CJC conference on this topic) Establishment of a national memorial to the Holocaust in Ottawa that would complement effective and useful programming under annual Raoul Wallenberg Day and National Yom Hashoah Day commemorations Ensuring that all services available over the public airwaves are in compliance with the Canadian regulatory regime (CRTC, etc.) including Canadian laws and regulations, industry standards and Canadian values. Citizenship and Immigration: Hon. Judy Sgro (York West) Community and homeland security through the vigorous implementation of antiterrorism legislation in a context of human rights and the criminal inadmissibility sections of the Immigration Act to keep terrorists, hatemongers and war criminals out of Canada (in this context, we will be developing a policy on identity cards) Concerns about Canadian immigration policy including: the importance of family reunification, the points system and possible bias, receptivity to Canadian values (see civil discourse). Support for the proposed judicialization of the citizenship revocation process for war criminals but call for an accelerated pace of decision-making and faster action on deportations of war criminals or terrorists (see Justice section) Continue to expedite the arrival in Canada of Israeli schlichim and other possible visa issues. ... In conjunction with CIC, which has primary jurisdiction, CJC will play a support role in outreach to civil society sectors such NGOs, faith communities, ethnocultural organizations and academia in promoting support in Canada for the State of Israel, as the expression of the Jewish people’s self determination, and for a renewed Middle East peace process, based on the cessation of violence and terrorism as well as on justice and security. Issues pertaining to international human rights forums, which Palestinian and Arab delegations are using to internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to attack Israel, promote antisemitism and deny Jewish human rights ... Justice and Attorney General: Hon. Irwin Cotler (Mount Royal) Support for consistent and across-the-board implementation of the anti-hate laws of the Criminal Code (in cooperation with provincial Attorneys General), no matter what the source. As well, we call on the Attorney General to ensure the consistent implementation across the country of sentence-enhancement provisions for hate-motivated crimes and new crimes against houses of worship and cemeteries provisions, as per the provisions of Bill C-36, the antiterrorism legislation (which we would argue need to be expanded to cover other communal property and institutions.) Consideration of various options to deal with hate on the Internet, including the new provisions in Bill C-36 (including amendments to the Criminal Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act.) legislation affecting religious practice (e.g., shechitah, Muslim zabiha) Urgent prosecution of Nazi war criminals in Canada through the use of civil as well as criminal remedies and extradition where relevant (applies to cases underway and the need for immediate action against other suspects)."

Howard Dean just recently announced his new Foreign Policy and National Security Advisors. Out of 15 advisors at least seven are Jews: Benjamin R. Barber; Ivo H. Daalder; Morton H. Halperin; Elisa D. Harris; Franklin D. Kramer; Clyde Prestowitz; and Jeffrey Sachs. Halperin is on the payroll of our beloved Georgian rebel financier and international speculator George Soros, active as head of the Open Society Institute in Washington. Interesting to notice is that Danny E. Sebright has been Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Dean for over a year and a half. He is working for the Cohen Group headed by no less than former Minister of Defense, William Cohen.

Dmatek wins Californian prison tender,
By Eli Daniel, Haaretz (Israel), December 11, 2003
"Security technology provider Dmatek yesterday announced that it won a tender to supply its prisoner surveillance system, the AMS-20001, to a big prison in California. Dmatek, a London-listed Israeli company that develops electronic control and surveillance technology, said that the deal won by its subsidiary Elmo-Tech is worth about $400,000. And based on the company's modus operandi, it will probably make more later on through support and maintenance services. The AMS-20001 system can track hundreds of prisoners bearing standard electronic tags, which Dmatek manufactures. The system was born of Dmatek's experience in electronic control and monitoring systems. It keeps track of individuals or groups and their immediate surroundings, in prison or in defined open areas. It is supposed to track the prisoners' location in real time. The system can be adapted to different kinds of buildings, Dmatek says, enabling prisoners who are allowed out to work, for instance, to still be monitored. Dmatek expects the market for surveillance systems in prisons to pick up in the years to come because of the overcrowding, mainly in the United States. The company's immediate market includes about a thousand federal prisons throughout the U.S., each of which has an average of 250 inmates. The news of the California win sent its stock climbing 2.7 percent on the London exchange, pushing its company value up to 17 million pounds sterling."

Lenny Bruce Pardoned for 4-Letter Offense,
Yahoo! News (from Associated Press), December 23, 2003
"Long after four-letter words in standup comedy lost their ability to shock, Lenny Brucewhose foul-mouthed rants started the trend — was posthumously pardoned Tuesday for his 1964 obscenity conviction. Lenny Bruce Gov. George Pataki granted the pardon after a campaign that included Bruce's daughter and former wife, and entertainers such as Robin Williams, the Smothers Brothers, and Penn and Teller. "Freedom of speech is one of the greatest American liberties and I hope this pardon serves as a reminder of the precious freedoms we are fighting to preserve as we continue to wage the war on terror," Pataki said. It was the first posthumous pardon in New York state history. Bruce's supporters called Pataki's decision a victory for the First Amendment and for the legacy of the pioneering comic, who helped transform his art ... Bruce was arrested during a November 1964 performance at Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village. He used more than 100 "obscene" words, according to undercover New York City police detectives who attended the show, and was charged with giving an obscene performance. Bruce's performances at the time were littered with four-letter words, and sexual references to Eleanor Roosevelt and St. Paul, among others. Bruce was convicted after a six-month trial and then mishandled his own appeal, refusing to follow the court's rules. He was sentenced to four months in jail but left the state and never served the term. Despite Bruce's frenetic stage presence, carrying the mantle of free speech in the cultural wars of the 1960s wore him down. He died of a drug overdose in 1966 with his conviction still on the books."

Analysis: Dean wins fight for Jewish Dems,
By MARTIN SIEFF, Interest Alert (from UPI), December 2003
"Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has confounded pundits by winning strong fundraising support across the board from within the American Jewish community and he is beating out Joe Lieberman for the support of Jewish Democrats. On Friday, Dean picked up the endorsement of one the most influential rising Jewish Democrats in the House of Representatives. Deputy Chief Whip Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois' Ninth District, which includes significantly Jewish Morton Grove, Skokie, Niles, Lincolnwood, as well as several Northwest Chicago neighborhoods, followed New York's Jerry Nadler and California's Bob Filner in joining Dean's bandwagon... Dean is now scooping up the lion's share of traditional Jewish Democratic financial support and enjoys the strong support of some prominent Jewish Democrats who previously backed President Bill Clinton. Dean is a strong support of traditional church-state separation, which has always been a hot-button issue for Jewish Democrats. Lieberman appears to have alarmed them with his support of moral majority initiatives that threaten to weaken those barrier ... Indeed, the joint chairman of [Dean's] national campaign is Boston-based Steve Grossman, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and former head of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, AIPAC, the mighty pro-Israel lobby on Capitol Hill. And Dean's policy director, Jeremy Ben-Ami, came to him from the left-leaning New Israel Fund. Dean campaign officials say they cannot break down what proportion of their financial support comes from Jewish Democrats. But they have no doubt that they are doing well in that community. "Governor Dean enjoys tremendous support in the Jewish community and he looks forward to continuing to build on it," said Matt Dorf, Jewish affairs and outreach adviser to the Dean campaign."

Bush, Jewish leaders meet Kessel: Bush reflects on 'strong' relationship with Sharon,
CNN, Tuesday, December 23, 2003
"At a menorah lighting ceremony at the White House, President Bush prayed for Americans serving in the U.S. armed forces and expressed his hope that all people who live under oppression will one day be free. "We hope and pray that all who live under tyranny, will see their day of freedom, and that the light of faith will always shine through the darkness," Bush said before candles were lighted Monday on a 3-foot candelabra that's more than two centuries old. "We also pray for the brave men and women of our armed forces -- many of whom are spending the holiday season far from home and their loved ones," he added. Hebrew blessings were given by Jacob Murphy, 6, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Sidney Hallem, 6, whose father, Lt. Col. Wayne Hallem, recently returned from Okinawa, Japan, and is based at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Murphy struggled to light the wicks but got a boost from his father, Capt. Neil Murphy, a member of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, which returned from Iraq in June. (Today in Iraq: Hanukkah commemorates Jews' successful rebellion against suppression of their religion under the Syrian-Greek empire in 165 B.C. Led by the Maccabee family, the Jews drove the Greeks from Jerusalem and reclaimed Jerusalem Temple for religious services. The story says there was only enough oil to burn the temple menorah for one day but miraculously it burned for eight days. Accordingly, Jews light the menorah on each of the eight nights of Hanukkah. Meeting with rabbis, Bush met in the Roosevelt Room with about 20 rabbis and Jewish community leaders. "He talked a lot about the war on terrorism, the need to perpetuate an agenda of democracy and how America will not back down even though terrorists are trying to create a climate of fear," said Rabbi David Kessel, director of the Hillel campus organization at the University of Texas at Austin, who attended the meeting. Bush reflected on what he called his "strong" relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Kessel said."

Congressional Black Congress Target of Pro-Israel Lobby?, Members of the Congressional Black Congress Have Been Particularly Vulnerable to the Pressures Exerted by the Pro-Israel Lobby,
by Margaret Kimberly, The Black Commentator, December 18, 2003
"As the presidential campaign season heats up every day brings news of endorsement one-upmanship. In one week we witnessed Al Gore endorsing Howard Dean, Charles Rangel and other black elected officials endorsing Wesley Clark, South Carolina Black Congressman James Clyburn endorsing Dick Gephardt, and Al Sharpton angry because no one had endorsed him. It was expected that Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, would soon endorse Howard Dean as well. But Cummings’ endorsement hit a temporary snag. The Baltimore Sun reported that the Cummings endorsement was in jeopardy because leaders of Baltimore’s Jewish community were concerned about Dean’s commitment to Israel. Dean made headlines in September when he said that the United States should be “even handed” in dealing with Israel and the Palestinians. One would have thought from the response that Dean had expressed love for suicide bombers. It didn’t seem to help that Dean’s wife is Jewish and that his national campaign co-chairman, Steve Grossman, was formerly president of the American Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC). Anyone who steps outside of pro-Israeli orthodoxy gets the cold shoulder, even if his credentials are otherwise acceptable. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have been particularly vulnerable to the pressures exerted by the pro-Israel lobby. In 2002 Cynthia McKinney of Georgia and Earl Hilliard of Alabama were both defeated by challengers who raised large sums of money from Jewish groups outside of their states. Both McKinney and Hilliard committed the sin of being even handed. The message was not lost on other members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Toe the line or lose your seat. The ascendancy of George W. Bush and the American right wing has emboldened the Israeli right wing and its American allies. So much so that not only black elected officials are under threat. During a call-in segment on C-Span Senator John Kerry gave an odd response to a question about politicians who are afraid to stand up to Israel when its policies don’t merit American support. The caller “sensed a visceral fear of all the candidates to take this issue head on.” Kerry responded that he and other candidates had no such fear but he then went on to answer in such a way that he proved the caller right. He said in part, “Israel is fighting for its survival.” Israel is the only nation in that region with both nuclear weapons and the backing of the world’s only super power. That is not a description of a country fighting for survival. The unstated assumption of the Baltimore Sun article was that Cummings would suffer the fate of his colleagues if he didn’t ask “How high?” when he was told to jump. The story began to change a bit as time passed, however. The website of the Forward, a Jewish publication, reported that the Sun was incorrect and that the Cummings endorsement of Dean would proceed as planned. Congressman Cummings ended the suspense when he endorsed Dean on December 13, in Atlanta. The issues raised by this concentration of power effect more than the election chances of black politicians."

CAMPAIGN CONFIDENTIAL,
by E.J. KESSLER, FORWARD, January 2, 2004
"Candidate Contribution: The most recently declared presidential candidate — President Bush — surprised a New York area Jewish charity last week with a hefty contribution. Bush's check was discovered in the mail Friday by the executive director of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, William Rapfogel, who was opening envelopes with contributions for the group's 30th-anniversary fundraiser; Friday was the last day a contribution could be received in time to guarantee the donor a listing in the commemorative book that Met Council is issuing for the event. Rapfogel almost overlooked Bush's envelope because it was from an accountant with a Texas address and addressed to Rapfogel personally. Opening it, Rapfogel found a letter and a check for what he said was a "four-figure sum." The letter said the contribution was from President and Mrs. Laura Bush. The check was drawn from the account of George W. Bush and listed a Texas address. "I was truly shocked to see President Bush's check," said Rapfogel, who mentioned that Bush also had sent him a letter recently praising "the wonderful work that you and your team are doing." "His words of support are always encouraging, but no one ever expects to open an envelope and find a check from the president of the United States," Rapfogel said. "It's an honor to be included among the charities he believes in."

And you thought Ireland was Irish? Silly you. Lord Mayor Gerald Goldberg.
Death of the Former Jewish Lord Mayor of Cork,
Irish Times, January 1, 2004

The Holocaust has almost nothing to do with America and its taxpayers, except to propagandize the myth of perpetual Jewish victimhood for the Jewish Lobby and Zionism. The Holocaust Museum is picking American pockets "by proxy."
The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum: A Decade of Increasing Taxpayer Funding,
By Janet McMahon, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, December 2003, p. 9
"Since it first opened 10 years ago, one of Washington, DC’s most popular attractions has been the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, located adjacent to the National Mall. Created by a unanimous Act of Congress in 1980, the Museum describes its primary mission as “to advance and disseminate knowledge about this unprecedented tragedy; to preserve the memory of those who suffered; and to encourage its visitors to reflect upon the moral and spiritual questions raised by the events of the Holocaust as well as their own responsibilities as citizens of a democracy.” As its Web site explains, the museum was “built on land donated by the federal government and funded with more than 200,000 private donations…As required by law, all funds for planning, constructing and equipping the museum were raised exclusively from private, tax-deductible contributions.” That was then, however. Now American taxpayers provide some 67 percent of the Holocaust Museum’s annual budget, this year to the tune of $38.4 million. Its funding for fiscal year 2004 was increased to $39,997,000. By comparison, this year the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts received less than $34 million in federal funding. That figure was cut to $32,560,000 for fiscal year 2004. On Oct. 12, 2000, moreover, then-President Bill Clinton signed legislation granting the museum permanent status as a federal agency, in effect locking in federal support. As a museum press release explained at the time, “Permanent status permits Congress to provide funding without having to review the federal role. Every U.S. government entity requires congressional authority before funds can be allocated; but not every federal institution is given permanent status.” It is Congress, of course, which allocates taxpayer dollars—specifically, in the case of the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the House Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee on interior and related agencies. In addition to the Department of Interior, “other agencies” for which the subcommittee is responsible include the National Endowments for the Arts and for the Humanities, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Kenndy Center. Washington Report readers who wish to keep track of how many of their tax dollars go to support the Holocaust Museum are therefore advised to pay attention to news reports on federal arts and humanities funding—and to continue reading beyond the first few paragraphs. It’s not only the legislative branch which supports the Holocaust Memorial Museum, however. On Sept. 3 the Anti-Defamation League—which a few years ago was ordered to cease spying on American citizens—proudly announced that it had been awarded a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to support a joint ADL/Holocaust Memorial Museum training program for law enforcement professionals. According to the ADL press release, the program “brings law enforcement officers to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC for an intensive program that challenges them to examine their relationship with the public and to explore issues of personal responsiblity and ethical conduct.” Americans well might wonder why, at a time when a memorial to World War II veterans who died for this country only now is being undertaken, when a national museum dedicated to Native Americans is just being completed, and when ground is far from being broken for a museum devoted to African Americans—the latter two groups having suffered here, at the hands of this country—the U.S. government places a higher priority on a museum dedicated to the victims and survivors of a European horror."

Rabbi gets invitation to meet with Bush,
by MONIQUE FIELDS, St. Petersburg Times, December 20, 2003, pg. 3.B
"Rabbi Jacob Luski knows exactly what he will say to President George W. Bush on Monday, if he gets the chance. First he will thank the president for inviting him to the White House for a Hanukkah reception. The rest of the conversation will be more serious. "I'm very appreciative that the president and his administration are standing by Israel during these most difficult days," Luski said Friday. "The United States of America and Israel have seen challenges as never before." Luski likely will get a chance to speak with Bush during a small gathering of Jewish leaders before the reception. Later, he and a larger group that includes Norman Gross, president of Promoting Responsibility in Middle East Reporting, will be guests of the president and first lady Laura Bush in the East Wing. Luski and Gross want to remind Bush that there are problems throughout the country. Antisemitism is on the rise around the world, and in Luski's and Gross' back yards. "I would also point out that we have our own evildoers here, both Sami Al-Arian types and, of course, National Alliance people," Gross said."

The amazing measure of Jewish Power is that everyone is afraid to fight back. Here's what the New York Daily News said about anti-bigot crusader Bronfman in 1998: "Billionaire Edgar Bonfman has campaigned vigorously against anti-Semitism, but the Seagram's chairman saw red when his son wanted to marry a black woman. 'Sherry offered to convert [to Judaism],' wrote Bronfman, 'which, though well intentioned, was not the point.'" [RUSH, p. 14] Some scholars have said Bronfman is a moral fraud, Judeo centered bigot, and hypocrite, of the first order. As the head of the World Jewish Congress, he is an icon for the moral farce that is world Jewry.
European Commission is anti-Semitic, say Jewish groups,
EU Observer, January 5, 2004
"Two of the most important Jewish organizations have accused the European Commission of being anti-semitic. In a guest commentary for the Financial Times, the President of the World Jewish Congress Edgar M. Bronfman and the President of the European Jewish Congress Cobi Benatoff write, "Anti-Semitism can be expressed in two ways: by action and inaction. Remarkably, the European Commission is guilty of both". The writers take the Brussels executive to task both for releasing a poll in November in which Israel was named as the greatest threat to world peace and for censoring a study that reported on the involvement of Muslim minorities in incidents of mounting European anti-semitism. "Both of these actions were politically motivated, demonstrating a failure of will and decency", write Mr Bronfman and Mr Benatoff. "Outside Israel, the majority of the world's violent anti-semitic attacks took place in western Europe. For the EU to hide these facts reeks of intellectual dishonesty and moral treachery". Their strong words come ahead of a meeting in February to discuss anti-semitism in Europe. The meeting was arranged by Commission President Romano Prodi and the World Jewish Congress after the furore caused the publication of the poll last November. The findings revealed that when asked to choose from a list of countries that may be threatening to world peace, 59% of those polled chose Israel. On the list were also North Korea, Iran and the US. Later it was revealed that a report by the EU's own European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia had been repressed after it found that many of the reported anti-semitic incidents had been carried out by Muslims and pro-Palestinian groups."

Jewish Group Says European Commission Anti-Semitic,
Reuters, January 2, 2004
"Two Jewish leaders accuse the European Commission of encouraging anti-Semitism by releasing a "flawed" poll accusing Israel of being the greatest threat to world peace and then by failing to release a report on the involvement of Muslin minorities in anti-Semitic incidents. In a piece to be published on Monday in the Financial Times, World Jewish Congress President Edgar Bronfman and European Jewish Congress President Cobi Benatoff said, "Anti-Semitism can be expressed in two ways: by action and inaction. Remarkably, the European Commission is guilty of both. "First, the Commission released a flawed and dangerously inflammatory poll, which purported to name Israel the greatest threat to world peace. Then, it censored a study commissioned by its own Monitoring Center that reported on the involvement of Muslim minorities in incidents of mounting European anti-Semitism. Let us not mince words: both of these actions were politically motivated." The poll, released in November, reported that 59 percent of respondents -- citizens of the European Union-- answered yes when asked if Israel posed a threat to world peace, a higher percentage than those who opted for other countries including North Korean, Libya and Iran. The Commission, an arm of the European Union, disassociated itself from its survey with the EU presidency saying the poll did not reflect the group's position on the Middle East. The World Jewish Congress, which released a copy of Bronfman's and Benatoff's article on Friday, said it was starting a global campaign soon to secure passage of a stand-alone U.N. resolution condemning anti-Semitism. "At the last U.N. General Assembly session, Arab states torpedoed an effort on the part of the Irish to introduce such a resolution, WJC executive vice president Elan Steinberg said, adding that the initial step was to seek the resolution's adoption at a conference of European nations next April.

Prodi suspends anti-Semitism talks,
buy Thomas Fuller, International Herald Tribune, January 6, 2004
"The president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, angrily suspended a conference on anti-Semitism on Monday and accused two large Jewish groups of working against ‘‘our best and mutual interests.’’ Prodi sent a letter Monday to Cobi Benatoff, president of the European Jewish Congress, and Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, saying he was ‘‘surprised and shocked’’ by an article the two men had written that accused the European Commission, the European Union’s executive branch, of being anti-Semitic. . ‘‘The attitude you have shown,’’ Prodi said in his letter, which was obtained by the International Herald Tribune, ‘‘goes against our best and mutual interests’’ and ‘‘forces me to suspend the preparations’’ for the seminar. . In their bluntly written article, which appeared in The Financial Times on Monday, Benatoff and Bronfman accused the European Commission of censoring a study about anti-Semitism and issuing a ‘‘a flawed and dangerously inflammatory’’ opinion poll that listed Israel as the biggest threat to world security"... An aide to Prodi, Marco Vignudelli, said in a telephone interview Monday that the conference on anti-Semitism could still take place ‘‘if we are able to solve this misunderstanding.’’ . ‘‘We want to have this meeting,’’ he said. ‘‘But not at any cost.’’ Vignudelli described Prodi as ‘‘deeply disappointed’’ by the article. ‘‘Then he became angry,’’ Vignudelli said. ‘‘He was really offended.’’ Prodi announced the conference after meeting last month with Jewish leaders, including Benatoff. Prodi implied in the letter that he felt betrayed."

Europe's moral treachery over anti-Semitism,
by Edgar M. Bronfman, Cobi Benatoff, Die Jüdische, January 5, 2004
"Anti-Semitism can be expressed in two ways: by action and inaction. Remarkably, the European Commission is guilty of both. First, the Commission released a flawed and dangerously inflammatory poll, which purported to name Israel as the greatest threat to world peace. Then, it censored a study commissioned by its own Monitoring Centre that reported on the involvement of Muslim minorities in incidents of mounting European anti-Semitism. Let us not mince words: both of these actions were politically motivated, demonstrating a failure of will and decency. Facts indeed are stubborn things and they are ignored at great peril. In this instance, those placed in greatest danger are not the obstructionists who withheld the study for nearly a year, but the Jews of Europe: witnesses and victims of the most barbaric act of slaughter and inhumanity to occur within the living memory of those who reside there. Inaction must be countered by action, and transparency must be the hallmark of democratic institutions, which is why we made public the Monitoring Centre report. The Talmud teaches that silence implies agreement and that is why we will not rest until every European parliamentarian, member state and inter-governmental body has a copy of this report in their hands. The significance of this study is clear to anyone who reads it. Just consider its most fundamental finding, that "one cannot deny that there exists a close link between the increase of anti-Semitism and the escalation of the Middle East conflict". The report explains that Israel's policies toward the Palestinians provide an excuse to "denounce Jews generally" throughout Europe. The report correctly assesses that "factors which usually determine the frequency of anti-Semitic incidents . . . such as the strength and the degree of mobilisation extremist far right parties and groups can generate, have not played the decisive role" in the spread of anti-Semitic incidents since the beginning of the second intifada. The study found that anti-Semitic incidents in the monitoring period were committed above all by rightwing extremists, radical Islamists, young Muslims and the pro-Palestinian left. It points out that "the dominating assumption of contemporary anti-Semitism is still that of a Jewish world conspiracy" ... The war on anti-Semitism, the world's oldest form of racism, suffered a tremendous defeat at the hands of European censors. Europe perfected anti-Semitism last century and those who wish to see the continent free from that evil cannot allow a few thugs, be they on the street or in parliament, to sully a people that needs no lesson in the history of appeasement and inaction. Democracies are not judged by how they treat current or future majorities, but by how they treat their minorities. A major test of European attitudes will occur next month at a seminar to be jointly convened by Romano Prodi, Commission president, and the European Jewish Congress, which will confront the challenge of the continent's anti-Semitism. We await its results. European nations were once the world's exporter of democratic values, patrons of human rights and founders of man's freedom. In our lifetime, Europe also bred and exported humanity's greatest evil. These are undeniable truths. At a time when Europe is debating whether its constitution should make reference to its Christian history, it may not be inappropriate to quote the New Testament: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Europe should heed these words. Edgar M. Bronfman and Cobi Benatoff are presidents respectively of the World Jewish Congress and the European Jewish Congress"

Jewish knowledge reaches deep into Howard Dean’s past — and his home,
by Matthew E. Berger, Virtual Jerusalem
"In the middle of a rowdy rendition of “I Have a Little Dreidel” at the Sobelson family Chanukah party, Howard Dean walks in and declares himself the cantor. The Democratic presidential candidate recites the blessings over the candles in near-perfect Hebrew in a dining room crowded with campaign staffers. “It’s another Jewish miracle,” Carol Sobelson exclaims. After more songs and a reprise of the Chanukah blessings for Israeli television, Dean begins to pass out doughnuts and cake. It’s just a regular Chanukah for Dean, the former Vermont governor later says, “except there’s usually only four of us, instead of 54 of us.” Dean’s most immediate connection to Judaism is his Jewish wife and the couple’s two children, who identify themselves as Jews. But Dean says he has been connected to the religion for decades. Dean never considered converting to Judaism, but he says the family did ponder the prospect of joining the Reform synagogue in Burlington, Vt., though they “never got around to it.” The candidate’s ties span from a college friendship with a Zionist activist, to frequent political appearances at Vermont’s synagogues, to lighting the menorah and participating in other Jewish rituals at home. “We light the menorah; we have about three of them, we sing the prayers,” Dean told JTA recently as he was driven from the Chanukah party back to his hotel, picking with his fingers at a take-out container of General Tso’s chicken. “We always like the first night the most because we like the third prayer,” he said. Dean asked the Sobelsons if he could chant the Shehecheyanu, the blessing for a first-of-the-season event, even though it was the third night of Chanukah. He got permission from Rachel Sobelson, 19, the New Hampshire campaign office manager and daughter of the hosts, who said it was OK because “it’s the first night that Howard Dean is at the house.” Dean is spending a lot of time in New Hampshire, and it’s paying off. He has a healthy lead in polls there, and political pundits have all but anointed him the favorite to win the Democratic primary campaign. The candidate stopped by the Manchester Jewish Federation on Dec. 21 to pass out Chanukah presents for children ... His first connection with the issues and concerns of the Jewish community came when he enrolled at Yale University in 1967 and became friends with David Berg, a fellow student who was a former president of Young Judaea. “My memory is that Howard was unusually interested, respectful and accepting of that whole part of who I was,” Berg, a psychologist in New Haven, Conn., said from Burlington, where he was visiting his daughter, a staffer on the campaign, and the Deans, with whom he spent Chanukah. In college, Dean was unafraid to discuss Middle Eastern politics in the tumultuous period following the 1967 Six-Day War. “It was a prickly topic of conversation, and I confess to being prickly in conversations in that regard,” Berg said. “Howard was not afraid to have those conversations, not from a critical point of view, but from a curious point of view.” Their friendship developed over the years, and Berg counseled Dean on his interactions with the Jewish community — for instance, when he attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and married a Jewish woman. Dean chose Einstein, the medical school of Yeshiva University, simply because it was the best school available to him, but the selection clearly impacted his education on Jewish issues. “I used to commute with a woman who was Orthodox and kept kosher, so I learned a lot about the dietary laws and more ritualistic parts of Judaism,” Dean said. Berg said Dean felt very comfortable in the environment at Einstein. “I remember us sitting down and talking about kashrut at the dining hall at Einstein,” he said. “He wasn’t afraid of making a mistake; he wasn’t treating it like going to a foreign country.” These days, Dean slips into Jewish terminology like a set of comfortable old clothes. Before a November debate in a Des Moines, Iowa, synagogue, he circulated among congregants and chatted amiably about how hard it was for Burlington’s Orthodox shul to get a minyan together until Chabad-Lubavitch came to town... Many in Vermont’s Jewish community tell of how Dean skipped an appearance with Vice President Al Gore in the mid 1990s to travel to New York to be at a Passover seder with his family."

Zionism's "neo-con" push to more legalized terror against the Arab and Muslim world.
Benador Associates Announces the Release of Richard Perle's, David Frum's Book 'An End to Evil: How to Win the War on Terror',
U.S. Newswire, January 7, 2004
"Eleana Benador, president and CEO of the PR firm Benador Associates, is honored to announce the release of Richard Perle's and David Frum's book, "An End to Evil: How to Win the War on Terror," published by the prestigious Random House. Following is an excerpt from the book (pages 4-5): "Yet at this dangerous moment many in the American political and media elite are losing the nerve for the fight. Perhaps it is the political cycle: For some Democrats, winning the war has become a less urgent priority than winning the next election. Perhaps it is the media, rediscovering its bias in favor of bad news and infecting the whole country with its own ingrown pessimism. Perhaps it is Congress, resenting the war's cost and coveting the money for its own domestic spending agendas. "Or perhaps it is just fatigue. President Bush warned Americans from the start that the war on terror would be long and difficult and expensive. But in 2001 those warnings were just words. Today they are realities. And while the American people have shouldered those realities magnificently, America's leaders too often seem to flinch from them. Every difficulty, every casualty, every reverse seems to throw Washington, D.C., into a panic -- as if there had ever been a war without difficulties, without casualties, without reverses. In the war on terror, the United States has as yet suffered no defeats, except of course for 9/11 itself. But defeats may well occur, for they too are part of war, and we shudder to think how some of our leaders in their current mood will respond. "We can feel the will to win ebbing in Washington; we sense the reversion to the bad old habits of complacency and denial."

Sick Puppies. Frum's New Neo-Con Manifesto,
By JOHN CHUCKMAN, CounterPunch, January 6, 2004
"Have you ever noticed how many of those odd people, the American neo-cons, use the rhetoric of nineteenth century European radicals? You'd be hard put to count all the references to "revolutionary," "radical," and "manifesto" in the American Right's industrial-scale output of pamphlets and tracts. This practice may have started as a marketing gimmick, the catchy application of a term from an unexpected context, but this kind of language is far more revealing than its authors realize. Hitler was partial to just this kind of language. That lover of fire engine-sized roadsters, cane and cape at the opera, and tea with elegant pastries always used such terms to describe his political movement when he strutted in public with whip and jackboots. One of the authors of this "manifesto" is David Frum. After years of dutifully churning out his quota of words for one of America's well-endowed, right-wing propaganda mills styled as academic institutes, Frum's big moment came with his elevation to presidential speechwriter. Knowing the quality of Bush speeches, you might think that being dismissed as a speechwriter would be impossible, but Frum managed the feat. He or his wife, the case is not clear, committed the sin of speechwriter lese-majeste, letting people know he wrote the original version of what became the "axis of evil" expression. You are never permitted to know such things. You are supposed to think such stirring words sprang directly from the head of President Pyle. When Frum or his wife bragged of his contribution to history on the Washington cocktail circuit, they found themselves packing their bags before the hangovers had lifted. Crushed by now missing out on the greatest period of winks, nods, and influence-peddling since President Grant's administration, Frum hasn't risen from his knees since being ushered from the imperial presence. Teaming up with Richard Perle may or may not rekindle a nearly-dead career, but it is Frum's first opportunity to walk upright in months. Richard Perle needs little introduction. He might be summed up as Washington's resident Creature from the Black Lagoon, displaying the accumulated toxic effects of a lifetime spent wallowing and bottom-feeding in the Potomac. He is exalted "fellow" at another of those propaganda-mill institutes, Defense Department wheeler-dealer and profiteer, tireless advocate for every American colonial war and bombing run, and energetic lobbyist for the Israeli military's way of doing things. The "manifesto" is contained in a new book, An End to Evil: How to Win the War on Terror. Now, there's an intriguing title suggesting fresh thought. An end to evil? Do the neo-con crackpots ever stop talking as though the date were 700 BCE? Perhaps Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell or others of the trailer-park heavenly host are credited in the Acknowledgments with contributions or inspiration? The title should frighten us. After all, anyone even near to influencing the use of atomic-powered aircraft carriers and thermonuclear weapons who speaks about ending evil in foreign policy is a very dangerous person. One can't help but recall General Ripper's concerns over a declining "purity of essence" in Dr. Strangelove as he launched his strategic-bomber wing on a pre-emptive nuclear attack. But as we live in a time when an American president himself speaks this mumbo jumbo, I suppose we have added nothing to our stock of fear ... If Marx and Engels could call for humanity to cast off its chains, Frum and Perle can call for humanity to take a hike. The boys appear to have sworn off using their expense accounts at cafes serving frites with their bifteck, because they are really pissed of at France. They want France treated as a rival, perhaps even an enemy, of the United States. Never mind that France secured America's independence in the late eighteenth century and that she has been a dependable ally through a number of wars and conflicts since. Never mind that France remains one of the world's true beacons for freedom and the human spirit, the kind of precious values supposedly motivating Frum and Perle. Does it matter that France sustained a successful struggle against terrorism long before the subject became trendy with neo-cons and did so without overthrowing other societies? Does it matter that France might have some genuine insight and wisdom in these matters? France simply must be punished, especially, one suspects, because virtually every point the French made in public against attacking Iraq has proved embarrassingly accurate ... The manifesto is about permanently deputizing the white vigilantes. Its recommendations lead in only one direction and that is towards a system of extreme suppression of views and beliefs in the world that mainstream America either does not understand or holds to be unacceptable. It invites a fear-forged world in which there can never be enough security, paralleling closely what one sees in territories touching on Israel. Israel never has enough security. Occupation, reprisals, and wars haven't supplied enough. Arrest and torture haven't supplied enough. Spies and assassinations haven't supplied enough. Atomic weapons haven't supply enough. Walls will not supply enough. The simple act of refusing to make a genuine peace is what makes Israel's paranoid apparatus seem necessary. And so the United States with its invasive, destructive policies that created Bin Laden in Afghanistan, that inflamed Hussein's ambitions, or that brought a quarter century of hatred from Iran. Frum and Perle don't want a revolutionary change in policies, they want Israel's paranoid apparatus extended to world-scale. This is a mad vision of a world which perhaps resembles nothing so much as Orwell's 1984 politely introduced through the back door in the name of stopping terror instead of being imposed by a police state, although in this vision America would become effectively a police state vis-a-vis the rest of the world."

The Israel Factor,
By Jonathan Tobin, Jewish World Review, October 7, 2003
"Will support for the Jewish state be an issue in the presidential race? The notion that Jews cast their votes solely on the issue of Israel is more myth than fact. Of course, you might forget that if you listen to some of the rhetoric aimed at Jews by presidential candidates. Can it be that Israel is once again a presidential-election issue? For all of the alarmist rhetoric we often hear from Jewish groups, the truth is that Israel simply hasn't been an issue during the last two elections. It was conspicuously absent from the discussion during the 2000 George W. Bush vs. Al Gore match-up, as well as in 1996, when Bill Clinton bested both Republican Bob Dole and independent Ross Perot to win re-election. BURNING THE ELDER BUSH In fact, it has been 12 years since Israel was a factor in a presidential election. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush's administration was seen as hostile to the State of Israel and many American Jews were eager to do anything to boot him out of the White House the next year. Bush's disdain for Israel and efforts to isolate its leaders were deeply resented. The hostility of his Secretary of State, James A. "bleep the Jews" Baker III, toward Israel was the icing on the cake. This probably didn't cost Bush the election, but he did get the lowest total of Jewish votes by a major-party candidate since Barry Goldwater, and set back GOP efforts to make inroads among Jews by a decade. The issue disappeared entirely in 1996, as neither of Bill Clinton's challengers could credibly present themselves as more pro-Israel than the president. Nor was the 2000 election much of a test of affection for Israel. Despite some outreach efforts to the pro-Israel community, George W. Bush was fatally handicapped by the association with his father, as well as by the fact that the Democrats nominated a Jew, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, for vice president. Ironically, Lieberman, who is attempting to move up on the ticket this time and become the first Jewish president, isn't the only Democrat candidate with Jewish roots. Gen. Wesley Clark's father was Jewish (Clark was raised as a Protestant, and is currently a Catholic); Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts recently "discovered" that his grandfather was Jewish; and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is married to a Jew, and his children were raised as Jews. Will any of this appeal to Jewish voters? I doubt it, but as a minyan of Democrats line up for the chance to knock off Bush the younger, some of them have not been shy about attempting to use the Middle East to make some political hay ... The decision of Lieberman to use the Israel issue against Dean is interesting because it may be his best chance to rally Jewish voters to his flagging campaign. Lieberman is seen by some as having trouble raising Jewish money. That is happening for two reasons, one of which is based on nonsense, while the other is rooted in hard fact. On the one hand, some believe Lieberman's election, would stir up more anti-Semitism. That is patently false, as his well-regarded run for the vice presidency in 2000 proved ... In a close election, a swing of a few Jewish voters in key states could prove fatal to Democratic hopes. And that's where one major difference from 1992 comes in. Because, in stark contrast to his father, George W. Bush is regarded by most Jewish voters as sympathetic to Israel. A DIFFERENT BUSH Though he hasn't a single Jew in his Cabinet, the presence of many pro-Israel voices in the administration (the neoconservative cabal that leftists are so worried about) has led to the crafting of a policies that are seen as closely aligned with that of Israel. In particular, his refusal to meet with Yasser Arafat, whom he rightly regards as a terrorist, is deeply satisfying to most pro-Israel voters ... But, given the fact that Israel is still assailed by a bloody Palestinian terror war, it would be foolish to think that Israel is a negligible factor. If the GOP can label a Democratic candidate as soft on Israel, it will hurt them. Despite the current banter, it's hard to imagine Israel being an issue next spring in the Democratic primaries. But if the Democrats aren't careful, history might reverse itself, as a Bush turns the Israel factor to his advantage this time."

LaRouche in 2004,
"Lyndon LaRouche, leading candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2004, today called on President Bush to stop his cowardly capitulations to Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. If Sharon persists in even talking about the expulsion or assassination of the duly elected Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat, President Bush should immediately sign an Executive Order freezing all U.S. financing of Israel, LaRouche demanded. Only such a blunt U.S. action, publicly announced immediately, is a sufficient response to the latest criminal actions and threats coming out of the Sharon government. LaRouche demanded that President Bush show some actual guts. Instead of defending America's true interests, the President picks on smaller states, while cringing every time that Sharon speaks. The U.S. cannot dictate policy to Israel, but the United State can certainly act decisively if Israel acts in a manner that challenges the framework of international relations and vital U.S. interests in the Middle East region. Cutting off all American government aid and all economic ties with Israel is an appropriate course of action, that the President can take with the stroke of a pen, LaRouche declared. In a related matter, LaRouche stated that, when he enters the White House in January 2005, he will launch a full probe into the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the U.S.S. Liberty, during the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War. He added that he would call on President Bush and on all other candidates in the 2004 Presidential race to join him in endorsing such an official probe, so that there would be no need to wait for 16 months to get the investigation moving--while many key witnesses are still alive and able to provide their eyewitness evidence."

Dov Zakheim's Homeland Security biz and the remote control of aircraft,
Autopsy of Reason, December 8, 2003
"Dov Zakheim. Not many Americans know who he is, but they ignore who he is at their own peril. If for no other reason, an dual Israeli-American citizen as Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer of the United States Dept. of Defense should raise some eyebrows. He was also President Bush's senior foreign policy advisor during the 2000 campaign. He was (is?) Corporate VP1 at System Planning Corporation, a major player in the "Homeland Security" industry. One of the products that SysPlan sells is the Command Transmitter Systems, a remote control system for planes, boats, missiles and other vehicles. It's highly customable and configurable to interface with an almost limitless number of vehicle types. The remote control theory of 9/11 looks a little better every day. Command Transmitter System System Planning Corproation's Command Transmitter Systems (CTS) provide remote control and flight termination functions through a fully-redundant self-contained solid-state system."

Noboa: Latino pols see one side: Israel's,
by Julio Noboa, San Antonio Express-News, August 18, 2001
"It's always gratifying to see Latinos honored for their contributions to the common good. For former Mayor Henry Cisneros to receive the Theodor Herzl Award for leadership in promoting Latino-Jewish dialogue is not surprising, given that he is articulate, diplomatic and broad-minded. He will accept the award from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Israel. Cisneros' contributions to governance, urban planning and public housing, among others, are worthy of recognition and respect. But for Cisneros to make statements of unconditional support for Israel while urging non-Jewish leaders to back the Jewish state is as astounding as it is disappointing. It is important for Latino politicos to enter into productive dialogue with Jews, along with members of other ethnic or racial groups, including Arab-Americans. U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriquez, state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo and City Councilman Enrique Barrera also expressed strong support for Israel. But did they meet with Arab-Americans before coming to this conclusion? On this matter, I and many other progressive and informed Latinos are not being well-represented by these leaders. For Cisneros to say that Israel deserves support in its struggle to defend itself raises questions. Does a wealthy, modern nation that receives millions of U.S. tax dollars in aid — more than all of Latin America — really need more support? Should a nation that has one of the world's most powerful military machines have trouble defending itself against suicide bombers? Well, it does, and it will continue to, not because it deserves more uncritical support, but because Israel refuses to make peace with its Palestinian neighbors by ceasing to occupy their land. If Israel were to offer Palestinians an honest opportunity to establish a viable state, the suicide bombings would dwindle to insignificance. There was a good reason for the Palestinian Authority to reject the "peace offers" that Cisneros noted "went further than past Israeli governments had made." They did not go far enough. They did not ensure that Palestinians would have the economic, political and territorial capacity required for a state independent of Israeli control. Cisneros declared that the "escalation of violence against Israeli citizens in public places raises the level of hatred." Well, that level of hatred would diminish if Israel would stop violating, on a daily basis, the human rights of millions of Palestinians — stop destroying their homes, shooting their people, bombing their leaders, leveling their orchards and fencing them in like animals. For Cisneros and other Latino leaders to make such utterances about Israel without considering the entire cycle of violence in which Israel has all the advantages is to be blind to the realities of Palestinian suffering. It is inexcusable for any Latino leader, politico or intellectual concerned about our own struggles for dignity to ignore the Palestinian struggle. It's not just about Latino rights and alliances with groups that benefit our interests. We need to enter into dialogue with everyone."

Dems, GOPers And The Shoah,
by James Besser, Jewish Week, January 9, 2004
"Holocaust and Nazi allusions are becoming all the rage in this year’s partisan wars. This week a long list of Jewish groups reacted with outrage to a political ad posted on the Web site of MoveOn.Org, the grassroots, Internet-based group that has dedicated itself to defeating President Bush next November. The slick 30-second commercial — an entry in MoveOn’s competition to find the best anti-Bush ads — explicitly compared Bush to Adolf Hitler. In the ad, a film clip of Hitler speaking gradually morphs into an image of Bush. The caption uniting the images: “we have taken new measures to protect our homeland.” A second entry in the contest drew comparisons between Hitler’s conquest of Europe and the ongoing U.S. war in Iraq. Neither ad was among the 15 finalists, but that didn’t prevent politicians and Jewish groups from expressing indignation. The ads were roundly condemned by the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the only Jewish Republican in the House, said that “As an American and as a Jew, I am disgusted by the casual and constant use of Hitler by liberal Democrats to attack people and ideas they do not like. To compare any American president to that monster cheapens the sacrifice of millions of lives and denigrates America.” But the National Jewish Democratic Council countered by pointing out that a recent Holocaust allusion by a conservative Republican prompted almost no criticism. The NJDC target: Grover Norquist, the influential anti-tax crusader and Republican guru. In an October interview on National Public Radio, Norquist — whose weekly breakfasts draw top GOP leaders — seemingly drew a link between the estate tax and the Holocaust. In an NJDC-supplied transcript, Norquist said that supporters of the estate tax defend its fairness by arguing that it affects only a small proportion of Americans. That, he said “is the morality that says that the Holocaust is OK because they didn’t target everybody. ‘It’s just a small percentage, what are you worried about? It’s not you.’ ” Jewish leaders didn’t condemn Norquist’s comments, but this week they drew the fire of Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen, who wrote that Norquist’s comparison was “bizarre and tasteless.” But there was little outcry over Norquist’s remarks in October, when they were made, or this week, when the Washington Post and the NJDC resurrected them. That shows that “on the topic of invoking Holocaust imagery,” there are “different standards applied to key leaders of the conservative right,” the NJDC leaders wrote. As for MoveOn, the group’s leaders expressed regret that the offensive ads “slipped through our screening process.”

Some scholars now say Jewish money and power ARE American politics.
Worried that Jews will go for Bush, Democrats plotting a counterstrategy,
By Ron Kampeas, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, January 6, 2004
"Worried by signs of President Bush´s soaring popularity among Jews, Democrats launched a coordinated campaign 18 months ago to win back Jewish votes. In recent interviews with the JTA, top Democrats who attended the meetings disclosed the secret strategy sessions for the first time. The campaign has three prongs, according to senior Democratic operatives who were involved in its formulation: Stress the Democratic Party´s commitment to Israel and raise questions about Bush´s own commitment; remind Jewish voters they are much likelier to favor Democratic positions on domestic issues, and marginalize Democrats who alienate Jews. Ann Lewis, the Jewish former director of communications for the Clinton administration, attended a series of meetings of top Democrats in spring 2002 to discuss what they saw as a deteriorating situation with Jewish voters. The trigger was a May 5, 2002, "Solidarity with Israel" vote in Congress that drew 21 nay votes — including 18 from Democrats. "Our discussions following the vote showed we were not as proactive as we should have been" with Jewish voters, Lewis recalled. The congressional vote wasn´t the only issue, however. It was becoming clear that Bush was gearing up for war with Iraq and that most Democratic legislators were less than enthusiastic about the prospect. In town-hall type meetings, Jewish community officials said, it became evident that Jewish Americans saw Saddam Hussein´s potential downfall as a blessing for Israel and wondered why the Democrats weren´t on board. "We were becoming aware of a string of political argument on the other side, which was that people who disagreed with the war on Iraq were somehow soft on terrorism or less reliable on America being a friend of Israel," Lewis said. The outreach initiative to the Jewish community was seen as a way to counter aggressive new Republican tactics to undermine traditional Jewish financial support for the Democrats. "The politics were ratcheted up," said a senior Democratic leadership aide. Some at the Democratic strategy meetings worried that Jews believed the party was taking the community for granted because of its overwhelming support in previous elections. That notion was reinforced by exit polls after the 2002 midterm elections, which showed a return to Reagan-era numbers when Jews voted Democratic by a 2-1 margin, not the 5-1 or 6-1 ratios of the Clinton era. The exit polls had unreliably small samples, but Democrats were rattled. "What we´ve done since then is to be much more conscious of outreach to the Jewish community," Lewis said, as well as "much more explicit" in support for Israel. Since then, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland has taken the lead in reaching out to the Jewish community. His campaign keeps a list of 15 pro-Israel actions Hoyer has taken since March 2003, such as leading a delegation of 29 Democratic legislators to the Jewish state in August. "We needed to articulate our case. I wanted to articulate our values," Hoyer told JTA in a phone interview. The senior leadership aide said it was a matter not of reformulating strategy, but of reminding Jewish voters where Democrats stand. That meant, first of all, allowing little light between the Democrats and Israel. One of Hoyer´s first tasks as whip was to retake the Israel solidarity vote. He did so on June 25, and this time it passed the House by a vote of 399-5. In a speech last month to the America Israel Public Affairs Committee, Hoyer said the group of legislators went to Israel in August "to express solidarity with Israel´s cause — freedom and democracy — as well as her determination to survive and succeed as a sanctuary for the Jewish people." The primary lesson of the trip, Hoyer told AIPAC, was that the West Bank security barrier, "which has engendered great controversy, is viewed by Democrats as a reasonable and acceptable attempt to reduce terrorist attacks." Hoyer is at the lead of a group of Democrats who have blasted Bush for criticizing the route of the security fence approved by Israel´s government. Bush has made clear he wants the West Bank fence to adhere more or less to the pre-1967 boundary between Israel and Jordan. Hoyer said he plans to be even more vociferous about Bush´s linking of the fence to loan guarantees for Israel. Taking such shots at a president who calls Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a "man of peace" might seem like folly, but Democrats believe Bush is becoming vulnerable. "Right now, this administration is perceived as very pro-Israel, but that could change," said Mark Mellman, a top Democratic pollster. He cited pressure over the security fence as well as the administration´s insistence on adherence to the U.S.-led "road map" peace plan, which many in the pro-Israel community consider moribund. Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council, was present at the spring 2002 strategy meetings. He says there are signs Bush may well get tough with Israel in a second term, when he doesn´t have to worry about re-election. Another pressure point is Bush´s perceived warmth toward Saudi Arabia. Virtually every Democratic candidate for president has called for greater scrutiny of the Saudi royal family and its role in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Lewis raised the issue in her own speech to the AIPAC annual meeting last month. Republicans say they´re eager for a fight on Israel and the Middle East. "The president and this party are significantly head-and-shoulders above anyone running on the Democratic side right now" when it comes to Israel, said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition ... Some Democrats believe it will be a challenge to move Jews away from their preoccupation with Israel. A Howard Dean candidacy will be especially challenging, Democrats acknowledge, because of Dean´s call several months ago for U.S. "even-handedness" in the Middle East. Those remarks continue to dog the former Vermont governor, widely considered the front-runner in the Democratic primaries. Dean has said his remarks were misinterpreted and that he merely meant greater U.S. involvement in resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict."

Another Jew appointed the Howard Dean Zionist steamroller.
Dean taps Gore foreign policy adviser, [from the Breaking News section at the JTA home page]
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, January 2004
"Howard Dean named Leon Fuerth, the Jewish former national security adviser to Vice President Al Gore, as chairman of his foreign policy advisers. An expert in arms control and non-proliferation, Fuerth is known to have guided Gore toward pro-Israel positions in Congress and at the White House, and likely will be a principal adviser to Dean on Middle Eastern matters. The former Vermont governor’s campaign has faced criticism for naming Clyde Prestowitz to its foreign policy team; Prestowitz has said U.S. aid to Israel should be conditional on Israeli concessions to the Palestinians. Dean officials say Prestowitz will not advise Dean on the Middle East."

The Soros Agenda. Free speech for billionaires only,
Wall Street Journal (Opinion Journal), January 3, 2004Saturday, January 3, 2004 "The press corps is finally giving billionaire George Soros the attention he deserves as the new Daddy Warbucks of the Democratic Party. Mr. Soros has responded that all he's doing is exercising his own Constitutional right to free speech. We'd agree, except for the detail that the world's 38th richest man (according to Forbes) is using his money to restrict everyone else's freedom. In his political funding, Mr. Soros is exploiting the loophole in campaign finance laws that lets billionaires donate however much they want to private political lobbies. But more than that, he also turns out to be a leading cash cow for the Washington lobbies trying to restrict media competition and political speech. Mr. Soros is the personification of what deserves to be called the "public interest" conceit. This is the idea that folks like Mr. Soros are merely selfless benefactors of truth and justice, but companies trying to protect their rights in Washington are greedy special interests. The hedge-fund operator made his money practicing capitalism but now he spends it trying to give himself and his ideological allies an advantage over other voices. Among his fundees in this case are four closely coordinated groups. The men who founded or run them are known in the Beltway as "the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," after what they are always claiming will happen if some market is deregulated. They are the Media Access Project, the Consumers Union, the Consumer Federation of America, and the Center for Media Education (which has morphed into the Center for Digital Democracy). Don't be fooled by their consumer-friendly names. All four organizations have long been mouthpieces of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. In the past three years they have bashed or knotted up many of the Bush Administration's major communications proposals. Take Andrew Schwartzman, head of the Media Access Project, and leader of a campaign to sink FCC Chairman Michael Powell's rules raising ownership caps for broadcasters. MAP's revenue for fiscal 2001 was $526,000, and according to the Soros foundation Web site the billionaire gave the group $600,000 from 2000 to 2002. The Center for Digital Democracy, meanwhile, has sued to block the FCC's new broadband rules that would free fast Internet access from crushing regulations. The Center is run by Jeff Chester, who spun it off from the Center for Media Education. CME received a $90,000 donation from Mr. Soros in 2001-02. Mark Cooper, research director at the Consumer Federation of America, has a talent for churning out studies about how Mr. Powell's deregulation would "undermine democracy." His group took $80,000 from Mr. Soros in 2000. And the Consumers Union, run by Gene Kimmelman, also dipped into the Soros pot for $175,000 from 1999 to 2001. The two groups teamed up last year to release a report blaming Mr. Bush and the FCC for widening the "digital divide." Not that the Four Horsemen fight only to control the airwaves. A few also played roles in promoting the campaign finance laws that have given Mr. Soros and his cash such a big political advantage. Combine their funding with the $1.7 million that Mr. Soros gave the Center for Public Integrity, the $1.3 million he gave Public Campaign, the $300,000 to Democracy 21, the $625,000 to Common Cause, and the $275,000 to Public Citizen -- and you can be forgiven for believing Mr. Soros got campaign finance passed all by himself. Like Mr. Soros, all of these groups share the view that the real arbiters of public policy should be elites like them. Their own political success refutes their contention that somehow Big Media dominate our public policy debates. And with the new limits on what other Americans can donate to political campaigns, and even on when they can run TV advertising, the Soroses of the world will wield even more influence. Which is of course their point. As his clout grows, we hope the media pay even more attention to the views of Mr. Soros and his web of left-wing activists. Our readers can examine for themselves the nearly 1,900 payouts that Mr. Soros made to entities since 1999 at http://prs.soros.org/GrantsList/GrantSearch.asp. We'd say they reveal a billionaire who is himself a threat to what he likes to call an "open society."

The Jewish Lobby may be working to mold the Latino community towards Jewish Ethnocentrism and pro-Zionism, the same way it dominated the NAACP and the Black civil rights movement for decades.
ODD COUPLE. San Diego’s Jews and Latinos reach out and touch each other,
by Judd Handler, San Diego City Beat
Remember the 1970s TV show Welcome Back, Kotter? One of the juvenile delinquent “Sweathogs” who made teaching a laborious chore for Mr. Kotter was Juan Epstein. A Puerto Rican-Jew, the Epstein character was an extremely rare representation of any sort of Latino-Jewish coupling. True enough, Latinos and Jews don’t exactly go hand in hand like chocolate and peanut butter. At least they didn’t used to. The Latino population of Southern California has exploded 450 percent since the last episode of Welcome Back, Kotter aired in 1979. Latinos have emerged as a political power to be reckoned with, and San Diego Jewish business and political leaders have made an effort to open dialogue with the Latino community. The San Diego Latino-Jewish Coalition (which is hosted and funded by the San Diego American Jewish Committee) has been meeting at least monthly on a regular basis since September 2002 ... The most recent SDLJC get-together occurred Oct. 22 at the Marriott in Old Town. The featured speaker, Gregory Rodriguez, a senior fellow with the New America Foundation and a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times’ opinion section, delivered the speech, “Why Mexican and Jewish Americans Don’t Understand Each Other.” Rodriguez, named in an Esquire list of the “best and brightest young Americans who will revolutionize the way we think,” supplied this Zen answer to the question embedded in the title of his talk: “In the past, they didn’t have to.” Latinos and Jews had as much need for dialogue as, say, Easter Islanders and Czechoslovakians ... . In Rodriguez’ opinion, a political conflict could arise between Mexicans and Jews in L.A. “The notion that Latinos and Jews are equal is untrue,” he said. “Jews are the elite in L.A., and Mexicans are the new emergent group.” And when the new emergent group naturally tries to place itself in the establishment, there’s a “natural tension that’s going to happen,” he predicted. Asked by CityBeat if the same power-grab scenario could happen in San Diego, Rodriguez conceded that he was most familiar with L.A. politics and wouldn’t speculate on the conditions here. However, Sam Sokolove, executive director of the San Diego Chapter of the American Jewish Committee—and, coincidentally enough, a CityBeat film critic—said after the speech that in San Diego, Latinos and Jews “have recently acquired key political positions,” and it’s a significant, positive development that breeds optimism. Sokolove predicts a harmonious relationship between the two groups." [See also Minorities section.]

UIAFC establishes new Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy as umbrella organization for Jewish Community advocacy efforts,
Canadian Jewish Congress, TORONTO, January 5, 2004
"UIA Federations Canada (UIAFC) President Shoel Silver, along with the co-chairs of the Israel Emergency Cabinet, Steven Cummings, Gerald Schwartz, and Larry Tanenbaum, today announced a landmark agreement among Jewish Canadian advocacy groups to create a new body to conduct and direct a wide range of non-partisan public advocacy initiatives on behalf of the Canadian Jewish Community. The new Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA) will bring together two existing complementary Canadian Jewish Community advocacy organizations: the Canadian Jewish Congress, which has served the Community for close to a century in addressing Jewish quality of life issues in Canada and anti-Semitism abroad; and the restructured Canada-Israel Committee, which serves as a focal point on all aspects of the relationship between Canada and Israel. CIJA will also provide significant support to key organizations, such as National Committee for Jewish Campus Life, that are working to improve the quality of Jewish life on campus and that promote leadership and participation by the Canadian Jewish Community in advocacy efforts. The decision to create CIJA resulted from an extensive review, undertaken by a voluntary group of senior business and Jewish Canadian community leaders under the auspices of the UIAFC, of the existing Jewish Community advocacy mechanisms. This group, known as the Israel Emergency Cabinet, identified a series of steps to help the Community improve the quality of Jewish life in Canada, increase support for Israel and strengthen the Canada-Israel relationship. In addition to creating CIJA as a means to streamline and coordinate advocacy efforts, members of the Israel Emergency Cabinet have spearheaded the allocation of substantial additional human and financial resources and called for the launch of new initiatives to sensitize Canadians and the Canadian government to challenges facing Jewish Canadians and Israel. Key to the success of these initiatives is broad participation by the Jewish Community in advocacy efforts, to leverage and build on existing skills, knowledge and networks. “The need for CIJA is clear: the time has come for the Jewish Community to pool the resources at its disposal, to speak with a more effective voice on the most important issues of the day,” said UIAFC President Shoel Silver. “CIJA will communicate directly with those interested in Jewish Advocacy. Its membership organization, the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy Public Affairs Committee (CIJA-PAC) will encourage the direct participation of as many people as possible in addressing the challenges faced by the Community, and to provide a means for future leaders to be identified and nurtured.” Under the new arrangements, CIJA has also invited representatives of all major Jewish Community organizations in Canada to join a Community Council, that will provide directly to the CIJA Board advice on advocacy initiatives and participate in their implementation. Mr. Silver continued, “On behalf of all the Federations and Regional Communities, I want to extend our gratitude to the members of the Israel Emergency Cabinet for the leadership they have provided through this challenging period. Their clear vision and commitment have given a blueprint for both preserving and enhancing our Community’s interests.” The Founding Co-Chairs of CIJA were also announced today. Brent Belzberg of Toronto and Steven Cummings of Montreal will serve as first Co-Chairs of the new organization, which replaces the Emergency Cabinet ... Co-Chairs Brent Belzberg and Steven Cummings announced that Hershell Ezrin has been appointed as the founding Chief Executive Officer of CIJA. New initiatives initially sponsored by the Israel Emergency Cabinet in the area of research on anti-Semitism and quality of Jewish life in Canada will be launched shortly through Canadian Jewish Congress, with the support of CIJA."

Betrayal behind Israeli attack on U.S. ship,
By ADM. THOMAS MOORER, Houston Chronicle, January 9, 2004
"After State Department officials and historians assembled in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss the 1967 war in the Middle East, I am compelled to speak out about one of U.S. history's most shocking cover-ups. On June 8, 1967, Israel attacked our proud naval ship -- the USS Liberty -- killing 34 American servicemen and wounding 172. Those men were then betrayed and left to die by our own government. U.S. military rescue aircraft were recalled, not once, but twice, through direct intervention by the Johnson administration. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's cancellation of the Navy's attempt to rescue the Liberty, which I personally confirmed from the commanders of the aircraft carriers America and Saratoga, was the most disgraceful act I witnessed in my entire military career. To add insult to injury, Congress, to this day, has failed to hold formal hearings on Israel's attack on this American ship. No official investigation of Israel's attack has ever permitted the testimony of the surviving crew members. A 1967 investigation by the Navy, upon which all other reports are based, has now been fully discredited as a cover-up by its senior attorney. Capt. Ward Boston, in a sworn affidavit, recently revealed that the court was ordered by the White House to cover up the incident and find that Israel's attack was "a case of mistaken identity." Some distinguished colleagues and I formed an independent commission to investigate the attack on the USS Liberty. After an exhaustive review of previous reports, naval and other military records, including eyewitness testimony from survivors, we recently presented our findings on Capitol Hill. They include: · Israeli reconnaissance aircraft closely studied the Liberty during an eight-hour period prior to the attack, one flying within 200 feet of the ship. Weather reports confirm the day was clear with unlimited visibility. The Liberty was a clearly marked American ship in international waters, flying an American flag and carrying large U.S. Navy hull letters and numbers on its bow. Despite claims by Israeli intelligence that they confused the Liberty with a small Egyptian transport, the Liberty was conspicuously different from any vessel in the Egyptian navy. It was the most sophisticated intelligence ship in the world in 1967. With its massive radio antennae, including a large satellite dish, it looked like a large lobster and was one of the most easily identifiable ships afloat. · Israel attempted to prevent the Liberty's radio operators from sending a call for help by jamming American emergency radio channels. · Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned lifeboats at close range that had been lowered to rescue the most seriously wounded. As a result, our commission concluded that: · There is compelling evidence that Israel's attack was a deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew. · In attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder against U.S. servicemen and an act of war against the United States · The White House knowingly covered up the facts of this attack from the American people. · The truth continues to be concealed to the present day in what can only be termed a national disgrace. What was Israel's motive in launching this attack? Congress must address this question with full cooperation from the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the military intelligence services. The men of the USS Liberty represented the United States. They were attacked for two hours, causing 70 percent of American casualties, and the eventual loss of our best intelligence ship. These sailors and Marines were entitled to our best defense. We gave them no defense. Did our government put Israel's interests ahead of our own? If so, why? Does our government continue to subordinate American interests to Israeli interests? These are important questions that should be investigated by an independent, fully empowered commission of the American government. The American people deserve to know the truth about this attack. We must finally shed some light on one of the blackest pages in American naval history. It is a duty we owe not only to the brave men of the USS Liberty, but to every man and woman who is asked to wear the uniform of the United States. Moorer was chairman of the joint chiefs of staff from 1970 to 1974. He is joined in the independent commission of inquiry by Gen. Ray Davis (recently deceased); Rear Adm. Merlin Staring; former Judge Advocate General of the Navy and Ambassador James Akins."

CFL ACTION ALERT: DEMAND A CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION OF THE ATTACK ON THE USS LIBERTY,
Citizens for Fair Legislation, For Immediate Release: January 12, 2004
"The State Department will cast a spotlight this week on the 1967 Israeli attack on the U.S. spy ship Liberty where 34 American servicemen were killed. As some of you might know, this past June marked the 35th anniversary of the June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty. On that date, the Israeli armed forces carried out an attack by both sea and air against the ship. 34 American soldiers were killed and 172 were wounded in the Israeli attack. Since that time, two very different stories have circulated regarding the attack. Those supporting Israel claim it was a case of “misidentification”, but survivors of the attack and others dispute this and believe that the attack was deliberate. When the attack occurred, the US government was quick to participate in an Israeli cover-up, calling the attack “accidental” and ordered the surviving crew of the ship to remain silent under threat of court martial. That cover-up continues to this day. Last October, a former U.S. Navy attorney who helped lead a military investigation into the incident said in a signed affidavit that then-President Lyndon Johnson and his defense secretary, Robert McNamara, ordered that the inquiry conclude the incident was an accident. Retired Capt. Ward Boston said Johnson and McNamara told those heading the Navy's inquiry to "conclude that the attack was a case of 'mistaken identity' despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary." CFL, Citizens for Fair Legislation, calls on its members and all individuals of conscience to demand our government conduct a thorough and unbiased investigation into the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, and prioritize the lives of US soldiers and citizens over Israeli political interests. Act today by making phone calls and sending letters to our elected officials. TAKE ACTION: GO TO http://cflweb.org/congress_merge_.htm AND SEND A LETTER NOW."

Petition to Howard Dean for Clarification of Stance on Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Stop U.S. Military Aid to Israel
"To: Dr. Howard Dean As members of the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party, The Green Party, Progressives, Independents, and other parties interested in your candidacy, we would like to express our deep reservations regarding your stated positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Based on speeches and interviews given last year and early this year, you spoke often of the Israeli victims of terror, yet you failed to acknowledge the three-fold number of Palestinian civilians who have been killed by the Israeli Defense Forces, or the Israeli military's incursion and illegal occupation of large portions of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. These incendiary actions by the Israeli military have fueled much of the animosity in the region, and they must be acknowledged in any fair assessment of the situation. It is also important to recognize that the expropriation of land and settlement activities have been repeatedly condemned by the U.N. Security Council, and the United Nation's General Assembly has determined that Israel's occupation of the territories have "no legal basis". Additionally, in an interview with The Forward earlier this year, you stated that your views are closer to AIPAC's (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) than APN's (Americans for Peace Now). We view AIPAC's positions as more hawkish and one-sided, resembling the vision of the neocons within the Bush administration; and APNs as multilateral, reaching out to all sides of the conflict. We understand that statements can be taken out of context and misread. Can you clarify this statement? Lastly, you said in an interview with the Jerusalem Post that you support the $8 billion in loans recently given to Israel and would in fact increase the amount of annual aid from $3 billion to $4 billion."

ADL Urges Supporters of Presidential Candidates to Refrain from Using Holocaust as Political Attack Tool,
U.S. Newswire, January 12, 2004
"The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), deeply concerned by the use of comparisons to Hitler and the Holocaust to attack presidential candidates, today called on both the Democratic and Republican parties to urge supporters to "refrain from adopting Holocaust imagery as a political attack tool." "Unfortunately with the approach of the Democratic primaries and caucuses we have witnessed a proliferation of comparisons to Hitler and his policies, which have been parroted by supporters of both Democratic and Republican candidates," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director and a Holocaust survivor. "This is a trivialization of the Holocaust for political ends. The use of Holocaust imagery in a presidential campaign demeans the memory of the six million and others who died at the hands of the Nazis." Since first speaking out on this issue, ADL has received hundreds of e-mails from supporters and detractors of President Bush, some suggesting that the League's stance on the issue was politically motivated. ADL stressed that trivialization of the Holocaust is neither a Republican nor a Democratic issue, but rather a matter of respecting the feelings of those who could be offended by such images, including Jewish Holocaust survivors and their families. "To us, this is neither a Democratic nor a Republican issue, but a matter of human decency and sensitivity to human suffering," Foxman said. "This is about the inappropriateness of using Holocaust imagery for political ends. Supporters on both sides are guilty of adopting these images to attack the other side. We urge all campaigns and their supporters to refrain from using the Holocaust as a political attack tool."

Israelis to quiz Chirac on anti-Semitism,
Expatica, January 11, 2004
"French President Jacques Chirac will discuss allegations of French anti-Semitism in a meeting with about 30 Israeli journalists Tuesday, organisers said Sunday. During the week other French officials including Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and Justice Minister Dominique Perben will also have talks with the group on how best to fight anti-Semitism, said lawyer Nicole Guedj and Rabbi Joseph Pevzner, director general of Jewish schools in France who helped organise the meetings. The visit will come before Moshe Katsav arrives in France in February on the first official visit by an Israeli president since 1988. Guedj and Pevzner said the meetings were arranged because the Israeli public is concerned about the situation of Jews in France and racism and anti-Semitism after a string of anti-Semitic incidents in the past couple of years. "It is obvious that Jews in France live in a country at peace," said Guedj. "People must know this because exaggerated reports (in Israel) have a negative impact and hurt Jews in France," he said. Israel's ambassador to France, Nissim Zvili, told the journalists Sunday that the media must understand "French reality as it is. "We must not make it look better nor deform it." There is a real will to improve ties between the two countries, he added.Chirac in November ordered his government to draw up a monthly record of attacks on Jewish targets as part of its response to a growing climate of anti-Semitism in many high-immigration urban areas. His prime minister said at the time Chirac had given orders to improve security outside Jewish institutions, boost teaching of tolerance and inter-faith understanding in schools, and hand down exemplary punishments when acts of anti-Semitism come before the courts. Jewish leaders have been warning for more than a year of a growth of anti-Semitic tensions, especially in suburban areas of major French cities where Jews and Muslim immigrants from North Africa often live side-by-side."

Most Favored Democracy. The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies goes on offense,
By Daniel McCarthy, American Conservative, November 17, 2003
"The images on the screen show American flags on fire, children dressed as suicide bombers, Saddam Hussein triumphantly addressing a throng of Iraqis, and grainy footage of the destruction wrought by a terrorist attack. These arresting pictures and the voice-over narration tell viewers that the war in Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and al-Qaeda’s attacks against the United States are all part of a larger war that Israel and the U.S. must fight together. Congressmen and senators, White House aides and Pentagon officials, lobbyists and journalists are seeing the ad, which has been running on cable television in the Washington D.C., area. It is just one tactic used by an aggressive new neoconservative think tank, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD), to shape American thinking on war, terrorism, and the Middle East. The Foundation is only two years old, but already the group is making its influence felt on the nation’s policymakers. In early 2001, a tightly knit group of billionaire philanthropists conceived of a plan to win American sympathy for Israel’s response to the Palestinian intifada. They believed that the Palestinian cause was finding too much support within crucial segments of the American public, particularly within the media and on college campuses, so they set up an organization, Emet: An Educational Initiative, Inc., to offer Israel the kind of PR that the Israeli government seemed unable to provide itself. At first, Emet floundered, without an executive director or a well-defined mission. But that changed after Sept. 11, and Emet changed too, into what is now the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. The name is different, but the goal of influencing America’s opinion-forming classes remains. Emet became the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies thanks in large part to Clifford May, FDD’s president and an old hand at the spin game. From 1997 to 2001 he was the Republican National Committee’s director of communications. Before that he was a journalist—associate editor of the Rocky Mountain Daily News and earlier a reporter and Africa bureau chief for the New York Times. May’s vice president, Nir Boms, similarly has a background well suited to the group’s operations. Boms was an academic liaison for the Israeli Embassy in Washington and has served in the Israeli Defense Forces. He came to the group even before May, as Emet’s first hire. The foundation’s activities under May and Boms have been more ambitious than those of the typical think tank. FDD has targeted its advertising campaigns very carefully, with the television ads that ran in Washington and a print campaign directed specifically at the Hamptons. Hollywood has been considered as another potential target, and the foundation has even discussed using country music as a means to win over the American heartland to FDD’s point of view. Universities are also of particular interest to the foundation. Like Emet before it, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies wants to put to rout what it sees as anti-Israel, and indeed anti-American, bias on college campuses. To that end, FDD has established academic fellowship programs that last summer took 52 undergraduates and 19 professors—plus one journalist, Joel Mowbray, author of Dangerous Diplomacy—to Israel, where they could see the effects of terrorism at first hand and attend lectures by Israeli diplomats, academics, and military personnel, as well as spokesmen from other countries, such as Turkey and India, also dealing with what the foundation calls jihadist terrorism. The foundation has sponsored conferences with other neoconservative groups as well and even sent one of its staffers, policy director Eleana Gordon, to Iraq to organize a conference of Iraqi women in conjunction with USAID. May, meanwhile, is a one-man media whirlwind, arguing FDD’s case on cable television, on talk radio, and through his column on National Review Online. The organization’s campus programs have given FDD a cadre of media-savvy mini-Mays in colleges and universities across the country. “We look for students who are very bright, who are articulate, who are interested in being activists on this issue when they get back to their campuses,” May says. And activists they do become, sponsoring campus lectures by foundation staff, organizing 9/11 commemorations that have doubled as war rallies, and writing op-eds for local and campus newspapers. What makes all of this possible is the support the foundation receives from its billionaire backers. Its nearly $3 million annual budget comes from 27 major donors, most of whom are members of “the Study Group”—also sometimes called the “Mega Group” because of their sizeable contributions—a semi-formal organization of major Jewish philanthropists who meet twice a year to discuss joint projects. The group’s membership includes, among others, U.S. Healthcare founder Leonard Abramson, New York financier Michael Steinhardt, Seagrams patriarch and Jewish World Congress president Edgar S. Bronfman Sr. and his brother Charles, and Lynn Schusterman, widow of Oklahoma oilman Charles Schusterman. Some of the group’s projects have been establishing and funding Birthright Israel, which provides Jewish youths with free travel to the Holy Land; a synagogue restoration program called STAR (Synagogue Transformation and Renewal); and the renovation and re-invigoration of Hillel, the Jewish campus chaplaincy. More than a few of these projects have generated controversy among some American Jews, who see this small group of mega-donors exercising considerable influence over Jewish-American affairs. But for all the debate that has attended some of these projects, none before has been as overtly political as Emet or FDD. Leonard Abramson was the point man for establishing Emet. He, Michael Steinhardt, and Edgar Bronfman were the foundation’s board of directors at the time of its incorporation in the spring of 2001. Their original plan called for Emet to have centers in both the U.S. and Israel, with the Israeli branch to be located at Tel Aviv University under its president, the former Israeli ambassador to Washington Itamar Rabinovich. Emet was to have close ties to the Israeli government as well—so close, in fact, that there was some dispute between the mega-donors and the Israeli Foreign Ministry over just whose project this was ... Emet—even before it became the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies—was already looking to recruit Jack Kemp and Jeane Kirkpatrick, two future FDD board members, to “speak out on Israel’s behalf.” At the same time a prospective board of directors was being assembled, Emet’s backers and their associates were also in discussions with Clifford May about becoming the group’s executive director. When Emet was re-launched as the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies shortly after 9/11, May was its president, and Kemp, Kirkpatrick, and Steve Forbes—and also, initially, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.)—were on its board of directors. Money was still coming in from the mega-donors. Edgar Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt, together with Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus, each gave the organization $250,000 in 2002 ... In addition to such prominent, high-dollar donors, FDD also boasted a board of advisors that reads like a Who’s Who of neoconservative wonks—Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, Richard Perle, and Frank Gaffney among them— and politicians and political activists from both parties, including Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.). Fully funded, fully staffed, and able to claim support from members of both major parties, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, after a slow start as Emet, was ready to step into action. Along the way the idea for an Israeli branch was jettisoned."

Almost everything about neocons,
By STEPHEN J. SNIEGOSKI, The Last Ditch, January 12, 2004
"Neocons deny their own existence, but in his column for January 9 Justin Raimondo nevertheless provides an excellent summary of their movement. However, Raimondo, doubtlessly desiring to fend off the career-killing charge of "anti-Semitism," himself denies the very essence of neoconservatism. For example, citing neocon Max Boot's statement that the neocons' critics maintain that "neocons are Jews who serve the interests of Israel," Raimondo objects that this connection of Jewish neocons to Israel's interests is "a proposition that precisely no one of any consequence holds." Interestingly put. I certainly am of no consequence, which is why it falls to me and others of my ill-respected ilk to point out that the connection between the predominant Jewishness of the neocons and their support of Israel is self-evident. Now, Raimondo does acknowledge that neocons identify wholeheartedly with Israel: The defense of Israel has always been a foundation stone of the neoconservative approach to U.S. policy in the Middle East, but aside from that, the links of individual neocons now in government, such as Douglas Feith, to Israel's extremist Likud party, and to the "settler" movement, are no secret. To avoid the "anti-Semitic" stigma, however, Raimondo tries to separate identification with Israel from Jewishness. According to Raimondo, neocons support the self-identified Jewish state simply out of an ideological belief that is unconnected with ethnic identity. Apparently it is just coincidental that most of the leading neocons are JewishPerle, Wolfowitz, Feith, the Kristols, the Podhoretzes, David Brooks, and on and on. And presumably it is again just coincidental that the original flagship of the neoconservative movement was Commentary Magazine, which is produced by the American Jewish Committee and which has as its stated purpose the protection of Jews and Israel. It seems reasonable that Jews might support a country that describes itself as the Jewish state and that favors Jews over gentiles — just as it is reasonable that blacks would be more apt to support the Black Muslims than white people would be. As is well-known, many of the first-generation neocons originally were liberal Democrats, or even socialists and Marxists — often of the Trotskyite variety. They drifted to the right in the 1960s and 1970s as the Democratic Party moved to the antiwar McGovernite left. And concern for Israel and other Jewish issues loomed large in that rightward drift. Political scientist Benjamin Ginsberg (who happens to be Jewish) describes the origins of neoconservatism in his book about Jews: One major factor that drew them inexorably to the right was their attachment to Israel and their growing frustration during the 1960s with a Democratic party that was becoming increasingly opposed to American military preparedness and increasingly enamored of Third World causes [e.g., Palestinian rights]. ... Raimondo makes much of the fact that there are a number of gentiles who are also neocons. And just as all neocons are not Jews, all Jews are not neocons. Contrary to the neocons' own effort to equate "neocon" with "Jew," neocons represent only a small segment of Jewish Americans. However, that does not refute the fact that Jewish neocons are motivated by their Jewish ethnicity. It is perfectly permissible in this country to say that other groups are motivated by ethnic allegiance — to say, for example, that anti-Castro Cuban-Americans are motivated by their ethnic background (though not all Cuban-Americans are anti-Castro and some non-Cubans are anti-Castro) ... The fact that Raimondo has to deny the Jewish nature of neoconservatism out of self-protection illustrates the tremendous power of the taboo against discussing Jewish influence. And that very taboo has contributed greatly to the neocons' power and success."

Jewish influence is virtually omnipresent. The self-protective Jewish Network includes even the moderator of this the USS Liberty court, the "State Department's historian." Jews in the U.S. government who are "Israeli agents" -- literally or figuratively -- are legion. ]
Tempers flare over US spy-ship inquiry,
By Guy Dinmore, Financial Times, January 12 2004
"Survivors of one of the most hotly disputed incidents in American military history - the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty spy-ship in 1967 - on Monday accused the US authorities, past and present, of a cover-up in backing Israeli claims that it was a tragic mistake. Emotions boiled over in the basement of the State Department as the Office of the Historian opened a public conference on the six-day Arab-Israeli war with heated debate over newly released intercepts from the archives of the secretive National Security Agency. Most of the basic facts are undisputed. On June 8 1967, Israeli aircraft and later torpedo boats struck the Liberty just off the Mediterranean coast, killing 34 crew and wounding 172. The ship, one of the world's most sophisticated listening vessels but only lightly armed, limped into port. From there the controversy begins. An immediate US Navy court of inquiry backed the Israeli claim that it had been mistaken for an Egyptian warship. The US accepted $12m in compensation. While some historians have accepted this, survivors and a varied group of academics and former military officials insist the attack was deliberate. "You're trying to whitewash it," one survivor shouted from the audience as Marc Susser, the State Department's historian, acted as moderator and sought to keep order, refusing to allow speeches from the floor. Even debate on the panel of invited historians descended into acrimony with one contributor accused of being an Israeli agent. Two recent developments added fuel to the controversy. Last week Ward Boston, a naval captain who acted as senior legal counsel for the Navy's court of inquiry in 1967, signed an affidavit declaring that the late Admiral Isaac Kidd, president of the court, had told him that President Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara, defence secretary, had ordered a cover-up. And on Monday, David Hatch, the National Security Agency's own historian, elaborated on the recently declassified NSA material, the first time the eavesdropping agency had released real voice intercepts. Mr Hatch confessed that the information "doesn't settle much".

Here's the above State Department "agenda" for discussing the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. The deck -- as always -- is grotesquely stacked towards Judeo Centered defense and apologetics. Note the many, many Jewish surnames as Delegates to determine Israel's guilt or innocence.

ADL Decries Talk of Faith in Politics,
by Keith Peters, Family News in Focus, JAnuary 8, 2004
"A Jewish public policy group is complaining about political candidates talking about their faith. Is it wrong for politicians to talk about religion or even their own faith? The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) thinks it is. The ADL said in a statement that while candidates should feel comfortable explaining their religious convictions to voters — "appealing to voters on the basis of religion is contrary to the American ideal and can be inherently divisive." But that opinion isn't shared by most voters. In fact, what a candidate thinks about religion is information they consider valuable, according to Luis Lugo, a spokesman for the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, which commissioned a poll on the question. "Few Americans express concern about the use of religious rhetoric by political leaders," Lugo explained. "In fact, the vast majority of them are extremely comfortable with political leaders tapping into faith and religion to address growing policy concerns and the future of the country." President Bush, in particular, received high marks in the Pew survey. More than 60 percent of those polled said Bush mentions his religious faith the right amount of time, and of those people, roughly three-quarters said the influence of religion on the president's policy decisions is appropriate. Jayd Henricks, director of congressional relations for the Family Research Council, said Americans can learn a lot from a politician's faith perspective. "One's core beliefs at least have to be influenced by, if not largely defined by, one's answer to the bigger questions, the meaning of life, what their understanding of God is, what their faith is," he said. The ADL did not return calls for comment."

Dean Problems In Des Moines. Iowa Jewish activist says Israel controversy hurting frontrunner; Fuerth on board as foreign policy adviser,
by James D. Besser, Jewish Week, January 16, 2004
"With the critical Iowa caucuses only a week away and the race among Democratic presidential contenders tight, supporters continue to reassure Jewish voters that former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean does not plan to undercut the strong U.S.-Israel relationship. But the controversies first ignited by Dean’s call for a more balanced U.S. Mideast policy have created a “very serious problem” among Jewish voters in his state, said Alan Koslow, a top Dean supporter in Des Moines. “People do perceive him as saying he won’t be as strong for Israel as the U.S. has been in the past,” he said. “A lot of the problem is that Dean is being defined not by what he really says, but by what others are saying about him.” That has made it harder for Dean to get past the Israel controversy and make contact with Jewish voters on domestic issues, where he is in sync with much of the community, Koslow said. “Right now that’s a big hurdle,” said Koslow, a physician who has been working for Dean’s election for more than a year. This week Koslow was scheduled to hold a Dean gathering in Des Moines featuring Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a leading Dean supporter and member of the Jewish delegation in the House. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), whose faltering campaign has gained little traction elsewhere, appears to be the favorite among Iowa’s Jews — especially younger ones, Koslow said. Koslow said the tiny Jewish community in Iowa — about 5,000 families, he estimated — plays a “very significant role in the caucuses because we are disproportionately involved in politics and community” ... The selection of Leon Fuerth to head Howard Dean’s foreign policy advisory team was in part intended to shore up support among pro-Israel Jews ... Fuerth, who worked for Gore going back to his days in the House, has long been considered a strong supporter of Israel. If Dean is elected, Fuerth is widely expected to become his national security advisor."

Is 'Landowner and businessman' Oscar Berger Jewish? It might be important. The story does not say one way or the other.

"The Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution has appointed Tamara Cofman Wittes, an expert on Middle East reform and conflict resolution, as a research fellow. While at the Saban Center, Wittes will focus on U.S. policy toward democratization in the Arab world and the challenge of regional economic and political reform. "The events of the past few years have highlighted the importance of reform in the Arab world-not just as a noble goal, but as a key element of our national security," said Ambassador Martin Indyk, director of the Saban Center. "Tamara Wittes is one of the best and brightest young Middle East scholars in America today and we are proud to have her join the Saban Center at Brookings to bring her expertise to bear on this critical area." Before joining the Saban Center at Brookings, Wittes was a Middle East specialist at the U.S. Institute of Peace, conducting and supervising research on the Arab-Israeli peace process, regional security, and U.S. relations with the Muslim world. Before that, she was director of programs at the Middle East Institute in Washington. She has also served as an adjunct professor of security studies at Georgetown University and as a consultant for the RAND Corporatio ... Wittes was one of the first recipients of the Rabin-Peres Peace Award, established by President Bill Clinton in 1997. She holds a B.A. in Judaic and Near Eastern Studies from Oberlin College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Government from Georgetown University."

New OSCE Chair from Bulgaria Emphasizes Fight against Anti-Semitism,
U.S. Newswire, January 16, 2004
"NCSJ today commended Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy, the new chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for 2004, for using his first address before the OSCE Permanent Council to underscore his commitment and that of the OSCE to combat anti-Semitism in the OSCE region, which includes Europe, the former Soviet Union, and North America. "Bulgaria has gone further than any previous Chairmanship in highlighting the issue of anti-Semitism so early in its term," NCSJ Chairman Robert J. Meth noted. "We are pleased that Dr. Passy has already responded so meaningfully to last month's decision by the OSCE annual Ministerial Council and to the recommendations of non-governmental organizations like NCSJ." In his Jan. 15 opening address, which traditionally outlines the priorities of the incoming Chairman-in-Office, Dr. Passy stated: "We all need to pursue further OSCE objectives in combating aggressive nationalism, racism, chauvinism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and other forms of discrimination. The main focus will fall on preparing the three major forums: in Berlin on anti-Semitism, in Brussels on tolerance and the fight against racism, xenophobia and discrimination and in Paris on the relationship between racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic propaganda on the Internet and hate crimes." In a letter to Dr. Passy on Jan. 2, NCSJ had welcomed his assuming of the OSCE chairmanship, expressing faith that "with your leadership this year, and with Germany's hosting of the second anti-Semitism conference, Europe has a genuine and timely opportunity to correct its persistent and painful record on anti-Semitism." The letter, from Dr. Meth, NCSJ President Joel M. Schindler and NCSJ Executive Director Mark B. Levin, stressed, "The start of your Chairmanship would be an ideal opportunity to encourage participating states to cooperate fully with the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights as outlined in the Decision; to restate the OSCE's commitment to fighting anti- Semitism, racism and xenophobia; and to call on all participating states to send ministerial-level delegations to the April 28-29 Berlin conference, including representation from education and interior ministries, law enforcement, and parliamentary leadership ... NCSJ advocates on behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States & Eurasia -- a voluntary, non-profit agency created in 1971 -- is the mandated central coordinating agency of the organized American Jewish community for policy and activities on behalf of the estimated 1.5 million Jews in the former Soviet Union. NCSJ comprises nearly 50 national organizations and over 300 local federations, community councils and committees across the United States. Through this extensive network, NCSJ mobilizes the resources, energies and talents of millions of U.S. citizens, and also represents the American Jewish community in dealings with similar national groups abroad ..."

LaRouche sets frightening example in campaign,
by Boris Volodarksy, Yale Daily News, January 15, 2004
""Where is LaRouche? Where is LaRouche?" a group of audience members began to chant in the middle of Joe Lieberman's speech. Lieberman froze. "I suspect he's in jail" Dean quipped. Al Sharpton appealed to the audience asking them to respect candidates' right to speak and was rewarded with a resounding round of applause. At that time I did not pay much attention to this incident. I assumed that a couple of hardcore Republicans decided to disrupt the debate and that LaRouche was some sort of a cartoon character that I was not aware of because of my Disney-deprived childhood. It turns out that LaRouche is real enough. As Jeff Pearlman writing for Newsday put it Lyndon LaRouche is to presidential elections "what fungus is to the damp side of a rock" ... Once he comes to power LaRouche promises to eliminate the principal London's agency in the United States: "the Nazi Jewish lobby." Jews in general and Zionism in particular have a special place in LaRouche's ideology. He refers to the latter as "the state of collective psychosis." Perhaps my judgment is impaired by the fact that I am Jewish, Zionist, and generally sympathetic to Great Britain, but to me it is clear that the guy is a nut."

Indiana in peril! 200-proof Perle,
By STEPHEN J. SNIEGOSKI, The Last Ditch, January 16, 2004
"The The neoconservatism espoused by Richard Perle is the hard-core, XXX-rated, 200-proof variety. It's too extreme for the U.S. government to adopt in all its details, but it can serve as a guide for policy. It is an archetype — an ideal form. Actual policy, which must deal with political realities, can only approximate it. Perle and his co-author David Frum lay out this archetypal neoconservatism in their new book An End to Evil: How to Win the War on Terror (New York: Random House, 2003). "Ending evil," of course, is a very large undertaking, not yet performed by God. Worse yet, the evil Perle and Frum describe is one that could not be openly acknowledged by an American politician. Jim Lobe, writing in the Asia Times, reports: In what they call a "manual for victory," the two authors, both resident fellows at the American Enterprise Institute, describe an extremely dangerous world in which the greatest current evil, "militant Islam," can be found everywhere — from "Indonesia to Indiana" (not to mention "in some remoter areas of Venezuela," Paraguay, Brazil and northern Nigeria) ... The stakes could not be higher. Militant Islam "seeks to overthrow our civilization and remake the nations of the West into Islamic societies imposing on the whole world its religion and law," write the authors. ("Neo-conservatism, hardcore," January 13, 2004) With this dangerous all-pervasive Islamic threat, "There is no middle way for Americans," Perle and Frum warn. "It is victory or holocaust." With their emphasis on fighting militant Islam, Perle and Frum reveal that the oft-alleged goal of establishing democracy in the Muslim world is, at best, a secondary neocon policy, which must take a back seat when it conflicts with fighting Islamic radicals. Democracy cannot be allowed if — to cite Lobe again — that means "empowering Islamic radicals, as [Perle and Frum] make clear in yet another directive: 'In the Middle East, democratization does not mean calling immediate elections and then living with whatever happens next.'" Since elections in any Islamic country would always risk the empowerment of Islamic radicals, it seems that Perle and Frum basically would prohibit democracy in the Middle East. If radical Islam were the major foe, why would the United States have overturned Saddam? The Perle/Frum idea of radical Islam is so broad as to include Saddam — who was radical Islam's major enemy! It is apparent that to Perle and Frum the real enemy is not radical Islam but Muslims and Arabs who are hostile to Israel. Of course Perle and Frum portray Israel's war on the Palestinians as part of the "war on terrorism." They recommend that the United States "cease criticizing Israel for taking actions against Hamas and Hezbollah (or similar groups) analogous to those the United States is taking against al-Qaeda. The distinction between Islamic terrorism against Israel, on the one hand, and Islamic terrorism against the United States and Europe, on the other, cannot be sustained." (Direct quote by Lobe from the book.) It is inconceivable how militant Islam could possibly conquer the world, including even Indiana, as Perle and Frum imply. Islam is so divided, as illustrated by the fighting among different factions in Iraq, that Muslim states have not come close to defeating Israel during the past 50 years. Now, some envision a demographic danger inherent in high Muslim birth rates and declining white Western birth rates. However, Perle and Frum's recommendations for war and more war don't address that demographic issue, unless their aim is to totally exterminate Muslims — in an Islamic holocaust. It might well be asked why hard-liners would focus on the alleged Islamic threat and claim that if radical Islam is not eliminated, Americans face a holocaust from that quarter — at the same time that Russia, despite her decline, and China, in her ascent, both remain nuclear-armed. Perle and Frum portray China as a villain but not the fundamental danger; and at the time the book was written Putin apparently had not threatened enough oligarchs to warrant evil status for Russia. But why emphasize the danger posed by a fifth-rate enemy? Again, the best explanation for that choice of enemies is the defense of Israel. Certainly, Israel's greatest enemy is Islam. If one were primarily concerned about protecting Israel, it wouldn't be surprising if he concluded that attacking Islam was the best way to do it."

It's Me, Al Franken America's leading political satirist, who combines personality, education and religion, comes to Atlanta,
by Tom Singer, Al Franken (from the Jewish Times)
"Lately, Franken has been appearing at Jewish fund-raising events. His Jan. 16 appearance at the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta's annual campaign kickoff event is only the latest. "They tend to be a good audience in the sense that I do talk about politics, and Jews tend to know and care a lot about politics," he says. Pause. Then the quick postscript, "Not that gentiles are stupid." Comics, better than most, know the perils of letting others fill in the blanks, so you don't want to leave any. Rita LeVine, who is chairing the federation event with Jeff Levy, says Franken was a good choice to headline the campaign kickoff, because his political satire was fitting in an election year. "Al Franken was a frontrunner from the get go. He's one of the best political satirists around today, with a broad appeal to people of all ages," she says. "We're sure that Al Franken will be a huge draw. This was a major consideration, as a primary purpose of the community event is to reach out to Atlanta's Jewish community and let them know just what it is that Federation does." Franken says he likes Jewish audiences because he can use his entire repertoire. "I can also talk about things that I relate to that only Jews can relate to, being Jewish myself," adds Franken, who is not a particularly devout Member of the Tribe. As a youngster growing up in Minnesota, he wrestled with the theological 'Big One' common to many of his generation: "I sort of had the Holocaust pounded into my head and I think there was a good reason. But because of that, I had trouble accepting a powerful and just God that could allow that to happen. "As a Jew," he goes on, "I'm not very observant. We do go to seder every year. But I married a Roman Catholic [he and Franni recently marked their 25th anniversary]. I got her to renounce the pope, but that's as far as that went." Franken says his "kids think of themselves as Jewish," though neither has a Jewish education. "They grew up on the Upper West Side of New York City, so I guess they're Jewish by osmosis" ...[C]comedy may have been just a brief post-school phase, had he and buddy Tom Davis not met Lorne Michaels in 1974. Michaels, a Canadian producer searching for an American version of Monty Python, the scathing British comedy troupe at the height of its popularity, was casting the 1975 debut of "Saturday Night Live." Franken became part of the show's near-legendary original writing staff. While others struggled with the often-suffocating pressure of creating edgy, provocative, funny stuff every week, Franken chose to have others create the ideas for his weekly material, the luxury afforded by his bent for political satire."

Some scholars have argued that Mr. Francis has it wrong. The people he lists below are not just "neo-conservatives." They are also all Jews. And what does an open-door American immigration policy mean to American Jews and Israel? It means increased ethnic and cultural fragmentation, more priorities for Jews from other lands to move to the U.S. ("Russian" Jews are one of the best past examples who have been afforded special priority in immigration, thanks to the Jewish Lobby), disestablishment of traditional majority rule, and greater ease in solidifying Jewish political hegemony via a coalition of minorities ruled by Jews and a resultant unmolested American national nest for trans-world Zionism.
Bush Betrayal Flushes Out Neocon Nogoodniks,
By Sam Francis, VDare, January 15, 2004
"What is that John Podhoretz, Jonah Goldberg, David Horowitz, Tamar Jacoby, Suzanne Fields and David Brooks have in common? They are all neoconservatives, and all—unlike most conservatives of other identities and backgrounds—support President Bush's amnesty plan for illegal immigrants. What does that tell us? ... The common assumption Mr. Goldberg shares with his neocon comrades is that because so many illegals are already here, it's impossible to deport them and keep others out; therefore, let's legalize them. By the same argument, it's equally impossible to arrest all murderers, muggers, and rapists; therefore, let's just have amnesty for all the above. Like many neocon arguments, those marshaled in support of amnesty rest on dubious and inadequately examined assumptions, but the flaws of this particular argument are not of much interest."

With U.S. Help, Israel May Boost Missile Production,
by Adam Entous, Reuters, January 16, 2004
"With an expected boost in U.S. funding, Israel plans to step up production of Arrow missile interceptors to expand its missile defense system, diplomats and defense analysts said on Friday. Components for the Arrow missiles would be produced in the United States under a deal between state-owned Israel Aircraft Industries and U.S. aerospace giant Boeing Co. The Arrow system is one of the centerpieces of the U.S.-Israeli strategic relationship. It was designed to intercept and destroy Scud-type missiles, similar to the ones Iraq fired at Israel during the 1991 Gulf War. While the U.S. invasion of Iraq has eliminated that threat, Israeli officials say Syrian Scuds and Iran's faster and longer-range missiles still pose a serious threat. "We will be increasing production in a substantial way," one Israeli source said after talks in Washington between U.S. and Israeli missile defense officials. The Defense Department is expected to include funding for U.S.-based production in President Bush's fiscal 2005 budget, people close to the Israeli government said. But administration officials said no final decisions have been made and that the program may not make it into the final budget, which will be sent to Congress on Feb. 2. If approved, the U.S. money would help Israel double the rate of Arrow production, according defense analysts. The missiles would then be deployed in Israel. But the Arrow system also yields a wide range of technical and operational data that benefit other U.S. weapons programs. Chicago-based Boeing is responsible for building about half of Arrow missile components under the agreement signed with Israeli Aircraft Industries in February. IAI, the primary contractor, is responsible for integration and the missile's final assembly in Israel. Boeing declined comment. A spokesman for Israeli Aircraft Industries in Washington said the United States had funded about 70 percent of development costs of the Arrow missile."

["Neo-con" means "Jew." What better authority can we have for this than Israel's Haaretz newspaper which said: "The war in Iraq was conceived by 25 neoconservative intellectuals, most of them Jewish, who are pushing President Bush to change the course of history ... That ardent faith was disseminated by a small group of 25 or 30 neoconservatives, almost all of them Jewish ... So this is not a war that the masses demanded. This is a war of an elite. [Thomas] Friedman laughs: "I could give you the names of 25 people (all of whom are at this moment within a five-block radius of this office) who, if you had exiled them to a desert island a year and a half ago, the Iraq war would not have happened." -- White man's burden, By Ari Shavit, Haaretz (Israel), April 5, 2003]
French Minister Blasts Certain U.S. Ideas,
By BARRY SCHWEID, Las Vegas Sun, January 16, 2004
"France's Defense Minister criticized "certain radical neoconservative ideas" in the United States as harmful to U.S. relations with Europe. While France remains a major partner of the United States, Minister Michele Alliot-Marie singled out on Friday what she called American aspirations for economic supremacy as well as assertions of cultural and political supremacy. The French official did not identify whom she held responsible for asserting such views. "It is essential we recognize others' positions" as part of a trans-Atlantic discourse, she said. In a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a private research group, Alliot-Marie emphasized that Europeans had "a different sensibility" from the United States toward the Arab-Muslim world. Outlining the views of France, she said while terrorism is a great threat, its causes must be addressed, which she identified as "the sense of frustration in the face of injustice and poverty." "The humiliation is exploited by fanatics," Alliot-Marie said, while urging "let us work together to eradicate blind violence, but also its roots." France is neither anti-Semitic nor anti-Israel, the defense minister said, while implicitly holding Israel accountable. "We should be listening more to the Arab-Muslim world," she said. "The sense of injustice and humiliation is really very widespread," she said. Overall, Alliot-Marie's message was one of working together with the United States on international security. "It is something of a paradox that France should sometimes be stigmatized in Washington as a strategic adversary of the United States," the minister said. "To listen to some quarters, France is supposed to be trying to develop a counterweight to the United States, especially through European integration," she said. "Nothing strikes me as being further from reality." France and the Bush administration have been at odds over the U.S.-led war in Iraq, which France tried to block at the United Nations with calls for more weapons searches in preference to going to war."

Think Again: Neocons,
By Max Boot, Foreign Policy, January/February 2004
"A cabal of neoconservatives has hijacked the Bush administration’s foreign policy and transformed the world’s sole superpower into a unilateral monster. Say what? In truth, stories about the “neocon” ascendancy—and the group’s insidious intent to wage preemptive wars across the globe—have been much exaggerated. And by telling such tall tales, critics have twisted the neocons’ identities and thinking on U.S. foreign policy into an unrecognizable caricature. “The Bush Administration Is Pursuing a Neoconservative Foreign Policy” If only it were true! The influence of the neoconservative movement (with which I am often associated) supposedly comes from its agents embedded within the U.S. government. The usual suspects are Paul Wolfowitz, deputy secretary of defense; Douglas Feith, under secretary of defense for policy; Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff; Elliott Abrams, the National Security Council staffer for Near East, Southwest Asian, and North African Affairs; and Richard Perle, a member of the Defense Policy Board. Each of these policymakers has been an outspoken advocate for aggressive and, if necessary, unilateral action by the United States to promote democracy, human rights, and free markets and to maintain U.S. primacy around the world."

Israel 21c, January 11, 2004
"A delegation of 14 senior US federal and state law enforcement officials is in Israel for a series of counterterrorism meetings with their Israeli counterparts. The five day Anti-Defamation League-sponsored mission is taking place in conjunction with the Committee on Terrorism of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Participants include members of the FBI, Treasury Department, and White House as well as chiefs of police from Washington, DC, Connecticut, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas."
U.S. delegation seeks Israeli homeland security technology,
Israel 21c, January 11, 2004 [This story, same page as above]
"A delegation of 50 U.S. businessmen, Congressional leaders and administration officials are arriving in Israel this week on a homeland security technology visit, sponsored by Aish HaTorah. The main purpose of the visit and conference is to facilitate meetings between executives of leading international companies and Israeli entrepreneurs in homeland security, in order to encourage investment in Israeli technologies and collaboration between Israeli and leading US companies. Aish HaTorah is a voluntary organization of American Jews for promoting religious education that also promotes business ties between Israeli companies and US government concerns. The US delegation will meet senior Israeli officials and will participate in the Homeland Security Event organized by D&A. D&A, Apax Partners, and Israel Seed Partners also brokered meetings between Members of Congress on the delegation and Israeli companies. The delegation members are: Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) and Rep. John Linder (R-Georgia), both members of the House Armed Services Committee, while Linder is also a member of the House Homeland Security Committee; Senator Evan Bayh (D-Indiana) and Senator Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska), both members of the Senate Armed Services Committee; Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Infrastructure Robert P. Liscouski; Carl M. Bucholz, a former special assistant to the president; chairman and CEO Jack London of CACI International, the second-largest IT integration company in the US; EMC Corporation EVP of technology strategy Erez Ofer; Greenberg Traurig Law LLP managing partner Joe Reeder, Undersecretary of the Army in the Clinton administration; and chairman and CEO Richard Dreihaus of Dreihaus Capital Management, which manages $3.5 billion in capital."

Israel Presses White House To Reword Rights Report,
By ORI NIR, Forward, January 16, 2004
"Israel is pressuring the Bush administration to omit references to the West Bank security fence from the State Department's annual human rights report. American diplomats in Tel Aviv recently told Israeli officials that the administration planned to refer to the fence in the report's chapter that scrutinizes Israeli violations of Palestinians' human rights. But, sources said, the administration has not yet made a final decision on the issue. The report is scheduled to be released in March, the same time that the International Court of Justice is expected to take up the Israeli fence issue. Aides to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon are worried that a negative citation in the report will weaken Israel's case at the Hague, according to Israeli diplomats and pro-Israel activists in Washington—who also are increasingly concerned that any mention will be used as ammunition against Jerusalem in front of the court. The administration is still considering whether it will support Israel's position in front of the court. Briefs to the court have to be filed by January 30. The court is expected to start discussing the case three weeks later. "This is a very serious issue with dire potential implications," said a pro-Israel Washington activist. "And our sense is that administration officials are not quite focused on it."

Sharon Adviser Weighs Romanian Pol's Offer
By ELLI WOHLGELERNTER, Forward, January 16, 2004
"A political consultant to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is weighing an offer to work for a right-wing Romanian presidential candidate with a history of antisemitic statements, despite the objections of Israeli Foreign Ministry officials and Jewish communal officials in America. Eyal Arad, an Israeli public-relations consultant who ran Sharon's campaigns in 2001 and 2003, is considering an offer to orchestrate the presidential run of the Greater Romania Party's Corneliu Vadim Tudor. Arad told the Forward that he is waiting to see if Tudor — whom Romanian Jewish leaders have described as an "enemy of the Jews" — repudiates his antisemitic past before making any decision about working for him. "I didn't sign an agreement yet with the Romanian party; I am in discussions with them," Arad said. "The purpose of these discussions is to find out if they seriously intend to cleanse themselves of their antisemitic reputation. If I am convinced that the denunciation is serious and sincere and meaningful, then I can consider it in a positive way." Known as the "court poet" during the days of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu, Tudor recently caused an uproar in Israel by announcing that he would attempt to erect a statue of slain Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin in the Romanian city of Brasov. The idea, Tudor said in a statement to the Associated Press, was to provide "a proof of the appreciation and respect of the Greater Romania Party and Romanians, in general, toward the Israeli people." The plan was criticized by Rabin's children. In a statement released by the Israeli embassy in Bucharest, they complained: "The whole issue is a false communication spin, and we fully protest Mr. Vadim Tudor's effort to use Yitzhak Rabin's memory for his own political profit." Tudor established his political party in 1992 and entered parliament. He was founder and — until 2001 — publisher of Romania Mare, or Greater Romania, the popular magazine known for its antisemitic, nationalistic and xenophobic attacks on the country's Hungarian, Jewish and Roma, or Gypsy, populations. Tudor is frequently lumped together with Europe's other notorious right-wing extremist politicians, including Austrian Joerg Haider, France's Jean Marie Le Pen and Russia's Vladimir Zhirinovsky, though he is often described as more dangerous than his European nationalist counterparts. "We think that Vadim Tudor is xenophobic, antisemitic and anti-democratic," said an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman. "We explained to Mr. Arad the Foreign Ministry's position that he should not cooperate with an antisemitic party. But at the same time we are aware that he is a private person and he has a right to do what he wants to do."

Sign Petition: http://www.stop-us-military-aid-to-israel.net/deanpetition
"
To: Dr. Howard Dean.
As members of the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party, The Green Party, Progressives, Independents, and other parties interested in your candidacy, we would like to express our deep reservations regarding your stated positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Lastly, you said in an interview with the Jerusalem Post that you support the $8 billion in loans recently given to Israel and would in fact increase the amount of annual aid from $3 billion to $4 billion [Alternet]. Consider the following facts: 1. Israel already receives close to 1/3 of all foreign aid--granted without any significant oversight on he part of the U.S. 2. The grant money alone is close to 20 times the amount going to the Palestinians to help them rebuild after years of demolition. 3. According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS) and the Washington Report for Middle Eastern Affairs (WRMEA), from 1949-2003 the U.S. has granted or extended in waived loans a total of $97.5 billion through 2003—which exceeds that given to all of the countries of South and Central America, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean combined with a total population of over 1.1 billion people. 4. With only 6.6 million people (smaller than El Salvador), the total U.S. taxpayer aid amounts to over $70,200 per Israeli household from 1974 to 2003. 5. Israelis have a longer life expectancy than Americans, and their per capita income is higher than African-Americans and Latino-Americans. 6. The Israeli military is already vastly superior to the militaries of all of its neighbors combined. 7. According to the World Bank, 70% of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are living on less than $2 per day and malnourishment and anemia among children in the territories are reaching catastrophic proportions due to rapidly declining economic conditions [BBC Report] Do you think this is a fair and equitable relationship?"

Gore Mideast Advisor Helps Dean,
by Matthew E. Berger, The Jewish Times, January 18, 2004
"For a presidential campaign eager to dispel questions about a candidate's commitment to Israel, hiring Leon Fuerth could be just what the doctor ordered. Last week, Howard Dean's campaign named Fuerth chairman of Dean's foreign policy team. Fuerth, who served as Al Gore's national security adviser both when Gore was a senator and when he was vice president, was a leading architect of Gore's policy positions on Middle Eastern issues, including his vote for the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Fuerth's appointment is expected to go a long way toward counterbalancing the negative reception Dean has had among some Jews because of his missteps. "Those in the pro-Israel community who know Leon Fuerth and the role he played with Vice President Gore will be pleased," said David Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee. "He has a long record of involvement and there have been any number of encounters that demonstrate his understanding of the region and his support for a robust U.S.-Israel relationship." The primary value of the new appointment is the foreign policy gravitas Fuerth brings to a campaign trying to quiet concerns about the international-affairs savvy of a physician who became governor of Vermont, the nation's second-smallest state. Fuerth has eight years of experience as a principal in White House planning meetings with Cabinet officials during the Clinton administration. He would have been the leading candidate to become national security adviser had Gore won the presidency in 2000. Fuerth, a Jew with a pro-Israel record, could help dispel some Jews' concerns about Dean. During the campaign, Dean has suggested that the United States should take a more "even-handed" approach toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, called Hamas terrorists "soldiers" and said that former President Jimmy Carter -- whom many supporters of Israel consider biased toward the Palestinians -- would make a good Middle East envoy. Dean's campaign has said the "even-handed" comment was a clumsy attempt to call for increased U.S. involvement in the peace process, that by calling Hamas members soldiers he was bolstering Israel's right to make them military targets, and that some of the other Democratic candidates also have touted Carter as a possible envoy. ... "Leon Fuerth's appointment helps send a very strong message to the foreign-policy world and the American Jewish community that Howard Dean's values and policies related to the Middle East should be ones they should be comfortable with," said Steve Grossman, national co-chair of Dean for America and a former president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Before Fuerth, Grossman was doing much of the heavy lifting for Dean on Israel, using his own reputation and experience to pacify skeptics in the Jewish community. AIPAC welcomed Fuerth's appointment Jan. 7. Fuerth has worked very closely with pro-Israel activists on arms-control and non-proliferation issues."

Hartford chief at work in Israel,
By CAROLYN HANDY, Rutland Herald (Vermont), January 14, 2004
"Southern Vermont Bureau Hartford Police Chief Joseph Estey is spending most of this week in Israel, learning about response to terrorism and sharing information with Israeli counterparts. He is one of 16 police chiefs and FBI terrorism task force representatives participating in a trip sponsored by the Anti-Defamation league. "This was not a trip for the entry-level person," said Caryl Stern, associate national director of the league. Stern said the ADL wanted a cross-section of police chiefs and other law enforcement decision-makers to go on the four-day trip. The mission of the trip, in part, is for law enforcement professionals to learn from the Israelis and to share alternatives with them. "Because Israel has been living with terrorism for many more years than the United States has, law enforcement in Israel has created means by which they can predict, prevent and respond to terrorism," she said. Although she had no information on the details of the trip, Boston FBI special agent and spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said she expected that the group would learn how Israel deals with daily terrorist attacks. In the United States, law enforcement agencies share what they learn with one another, she said. "We have international terrorists, as well as domestic terrorists like Ted Kaczynski and Timothy McVeigh," Marcinkiewicz said. "It's good to be prepared." While in Israel, the members of the group will meet with their counterparts. According to their schedule, the group will meet with the Palestinian affairs correspondent from The Jerusalem Post, the head of the intelligence subsection for Arab affairs, Israel's deputy director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the brigadier general in command of Israel's special forces, the head of the volunteer division of Israeli community policing, Israel Defense Forces, and the head of Israel's drug squad. Stern said the Anti-Defamation League and law enforcement are both charged with protecting and serving the community. "We believe the responsibility for security extends beyond those just on the payroll for that purpose," she said. Stern said the ADL is the primary provider of anti-bias training for the FBI, the CIA and many police departments across the country. The ADL's mission includes the safety and security of not only the Jewish people but of all people, Stern said. Hartford Town Manager Hunter Rieseberg said Estey left town last weekend and will be back later this week. Estey has been Hartford's police chief for 17 years. He is first chairman of the International Association of the Chiefs of Police. Next year, he will be the first chief from Vermont to serve as its president. "It's a good thing for him, it's wonderful for our department and an honor for the state of Vermont," Rieseberg said."

Israeli envoy snub to British Jews Israel snubs British Jews with appointment of ambassador,
by Chris McGreal, Guardian (UK), January 19, 2004
"The Israeli government yesterday overrode objections from Britain's Jewish community and appointed a new ambassador to London whose selection has been described as an "insult" because he is said to lack diplomatic experience and speak poor English. Leading British Jews have been lobbying for weeks against the political appointment of Zvi Hefetz, a Russian-born lawyer who is a close friend of Ariel Sharon's eldest son and deputy chairman of a pro-Sharon newspaper. They want an experienced diplomat to fill the post. A delegation from the British Board of Jewish Deputies, which sees poor public relations rather than government policies as the cause of criticism of Israel in Britain, met Mr Sharon in Jerusalem last week. Members pressed for Mr Hefetz to bereplaced with a media-savvy envoy able to put across Israel's case in the British press. But yesterday the Israeli cabinet rebuffed those concerns and voted to dispatch Mr Hefetz, even though some ministers said they were uneasy with the choice. Mr Hefetz, 47, is a successful businessman who is co-owner of a leading Tel Aviv basketball team and deputy chairman of Maariv, a pro-Sharon newspaper. He is also the lawyer who represents the fugitive Russian media baron, Vladimir Gusinsky. Alarm bells rang in Britain's Jewish community after Mr Hefetz admitted to a vetting panel that his command of spoken English was limited. There was also unease at his ties to Omri Sharon and the Russian oligarchy. Some Jewish leaders saw the political appointment of Mr Hefetz as evidence that the Israeli government does not take the choice of ambassador to London sufficiently seriously. Last week Joy Wolfe, the president of the Manchester Zionist Central Council and a prominent pro-Israel lobbyist, circulated an email to fellow activists. "I am in despair," she wrote. "Will those responsible for diplomatic appointments in the UK never learn? And do they not care that their inappropriate choices are a total insult to those of us who devote a large portion of our lives to trying to promote Israel's good name? If being an ambassador is just a political gift, then it is time many of us voted with our feet and hearts and walked away' ... Mr Hefetz will replace another political appointment, Zvi Shtauber, who has also been widely criticised within Britain's Jewish community for his heavily accented English, for rarely appearing in the media and for his poor handling of issues such as the Israeli army's killing of the British peace activist, Tom Hurndall ... Yesterday Ms Wolfe said she had sent her email "in an emotional moment" and that she would not follow through on her threat to walk away from lobbying for Israel. "My long history of support for Zionism and Israel is by far the most important factor and I will obviously continue to help and support Israel in any way I can," she said. On Friday the Jewish Chronicle dropped its objection to Mr Hefetz after saying it had discovered that he does speak English, albeit with a Russian accent."

PURGING THE NEOCONS,
by Joe Sobran, Sobran's, January 6, 2004
"Did you know that the word "neoconservative" -- often shortened to "neocon" -- is an ethnic slur? Neither did I, but some, er, conservative pundits have set me straight. David Brooks of the NEW YORK TIMES says of "the people labeled neocons" that "con is short for 'conservative' and neo is short for 'Jewish.'" So when other people call these people "neocons," you see, they're really calling them Jews, which for some reason is anti-Semitic. This must come as a surprise to Irving Kristol, who long ago cheerfully, indeed proudly, accepted the term. Though Jewish himself, he never suggested that you had to be Jewish to be a neocon. His Irish friend Daniel Patrick Moynihan was also called a neocon in those days, as are a number of other notable non-Jews today. Kristol is still known as "the godfather of neoconservatism" and in a famous bon mot defined a neoconservative as "a liberal who has been mugged by reality." The neocons were known for a qualified skepticism about the welfare state, though, unlike traditional conservatives, they accepted it in principle. Kristol wanted to ditch a lot of conservative baggage about limited government, the free market, and the U.S. Constitution. Nothing particularly Jewish about all that. (Kristol's son William, by the way, is also a leading neocon.) So what's the problem? Well, the neocons broadly agreed with conservatives about foreign policy. They were anti-Communist and wanted an activist, some would say aggressive, U.S. foreign policy. And a lot of them, many of whom happened to be Jewish, especially wanted the United States to fight Israel's enemies. In the last few years, "neocon" has become synonymous with these particular neocons, though it's perfectly possible to adopt the neocon philosophy in principle without being either Jewish or pro-Israel. In the real world, people can't help noticing that a pro-Israel faction has come to dominate the neocon movement. To say this, however, is to court the charge of bigotry. I like to define a bigot as "one who practices sociology without a license" ... Is there a lesson here for the neocons? I think so. Like the liberals of yore, [neo-cons] have carelessly allowed their movement to be infiltrated by Zionist partisans and agents who have brought suspicion on all of them. And just as the liberals of McCarthy's day had to purge Communists from their ranks in order to preserve their good name, it's up to patriotic American neocons -- surely the great majority -- to weed out the Israel-firsters among them. At stake is the good name of the neoconservative philosophy. It would be a disaster to its principles for the general public to get the false impression that those principles are nothing but a "front" for agents of a foreign power who want to trick us into wars against our own interests."
