Something I heard on Tech TV
I know that a lot of the stories that are listed on here are caught on Tech TV but I do enjoy that channel. It is easy to catch news from them by listening to it in the background when I am doing other things. Anyway, they were discussing on how the goverment is trying to make the software they create private. Let me give you an example. Redhat is free software, not just free in price but free in the way the GPL states. I am allowed to modify RedHat but if I do, my software is also subject to the same rule. It has to be open for modification and distrobution. The government is saying, for security, they do not want to comply with the GPL. This is wrong because the GPL states differently and we also pay for the government to create. Double wrong. You can check out
OpenSecrets.org to see what is the largest computer software company who donates the most money to the government and find out possibly why this new policy is being put into effect.
Root servers dDOS'ed
I didn't notice it but 9 of the 13 "root" internet servers that direct all web traffic around the globe were subjected to a serious attack late on Monday.
The FBI and the Whitehouse are now investigating the incident, which began at 2100 GMT and lasted for one hour. A spokesman for the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Centre said officials were "aware of the denial of service attack and addressing this matter". Another official described it as the most sophisticated attack ever mounted against critical internet infrastructure.
We probably didn't notice it due to the TTL on all of our nameservers, DDOS is lame. Lear to hack.
Slashdot Story: Using MAC Address to Uniquely Identify Computers
GameArena now requires COGS. GameArena has finally, after intensive testing, made COGS a requirement to play on GameArena servers. All servers on GameArena will require you to download and log into the new GameArena client before you will even be able to see them. What is COGS? COGS is MAC address uploader. It gets your MAC address then uploads it so if you do any bad things (i.e. warez, bad account), it can ban you. I see this as an easy fix. COGS is probably easy to fake. I haven't tried it yet. Lastly ethernet MACS can be changed in some instances. Read more

Boingo Wireless
I forget what TV show I was watching but there was a blurb about Boingo Wireless. They charge a lot of money compared to simple wardriving. They do have major areas covered by their own AP's but they are mostly hotels and airports. The pricing structure is like: Boingo Pro - $24.95 a month, includes 10 Connect Days. A Connect Day includes unlimited access in a Boingo location for up to 24-hours. You can even disconnect and reconnect within each 24-hour period from the same location with no additional charge. Each additional Connect Day is just $4.95.
Boingo As-You-Go - Not sure how much Boingo you'll need? Then sign up for Boingo As-You-Go and only pay for what you use with no monthly fees. It's only $7.95 per Connect Day.
Boingo Unlimited - Unlimited monthly usage is just $74.95. Connect all day, everyday, if you want. Sky’s the limit.
Now all this is is access to WEP secured APs. Visit their site at
http://www.boingo.com and grab a copy of their free software. The service sounds too expensive to me.
