Just wondering when you would contact a publisher about a novel you are writing and how you would go about contacting them to get it published?

Personally, I'd write a novella then give it to a suitable academic or two for educated scrutiny, probably burn everything and then look for a publisher.
In my country one might write a cover letter and CV, attach them to one's manuscript then post it to an address found on the submissions page of a national publisher's website.
