I don't know if this belong here or in IFIOTW.

But anyway, this hasn't been passed yet, and I hope it doesn't get passed at all.

"Users can opt-out of the 'additional material' blacklist (referred to in a department press release, which is a list of things unsuitable for children, but there is no opt-out for 'illegal content'"

But then who decides what is illegal and what isn't?
Totse will likely be called illegal just for the information it contains in the text files, along with many nother harmless sites that the gorvernment feels it needs to protect us from.

According to the site
The government reported it does not expected to prescribe which filtering technologies ISPs can use, and will only set blacklists of filtered content, supplied by the Australia Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
So great, we have one authority that has an absolute say on what people can access on the internet. And what's to stop them from censoring purely informative things or things which speak ill of Australia's shitty government?

I for one, am outraged, because after all internet is srs bsns.

Great,

Rudd wants to make us more like China or England.

I'm not too surprised.

Damn your government is fucked up! Don't you aussies have rights over there? Because over here we have a nice little thing called the First Amendment to the Constitution :D

As much as the government would like to, they really can't limit things like that.

Damn, if that shit gets passed then its just a few more steps to communism...

I love how their excuse is, "It's for your own protection." That's some 1984 or Brave New World shit right thar.

I don't think ACMA or the telco minister seem to understand the enormity of what they're trying to archive here. ISP blocking is NOT going to work - it will slow us down. And shit, we're fucking backward and slow enough as it is.

And who do they think they're kidding telling us it's all to stop kiddie porn?

Edit: trials not so hot: http://tinyurl.com/64flvd

This is fucking BS.

Seriously, what are we, China?

I hope there will be an ISP out there who wont partake in this. Our broadband speeds are slow enough as it is, don't you dare slow them down further.

I'm fucking angry. Fuck this. If this becomes mandatory, i'm moving. They'll most likely ban P2P, torrent sites, &t, etc. It's wrong.

if this is to try and block out CP, How is it going to do it? surely it can't distinguish an image of a 18yr old getting fucked to a 17yr old.

Rational thinking: "Site owner is innocent until proven guilty, there is no proof the person is underage."

Government thinking: "RAWR CP BAD! BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK.
Won't somebody please think of the children!"

Dear leader Comrade Rudd knows best. He shall single-handedly save the Australian people from the internet and shun the evil and violent content for all time. He shall stand like a sentinel guarding our precious and beautiful country from the sickness that has befallen capitalist dogs around the world.

In Rudd we trust.

This is some trippy shit.

"Preliminary results from the ACMA study showed that five of the six filters tested degraded Internet throughput speeds by between 22 percent and 75 percent, or more."

Way to go shitheads, that's just what we need, slow it down even more.

They should just ban the internet altogether along with TV, newspapers, and radio. Everything is bad for you. Cut off your ears, put out your eyes, slice off your tongue.

The best method would be to do what the robots did in the matrix, put us all in pods on little VR simulators so we can't do any harm to our precious little selves.

I don't think it will happen.

Do you think the ISPs will stand around and watch revenues go down the drain?? because they'll eventually filter torrents movies and mp3s.

they'll get hell from the Civil libertarians and not much real support and plenty of indifference from the public.
It was just a stupid meaningless election promise, like cutting greenhouse emissions .

I wouldn't say Nazi.

It hasn't unified the British people and made them think that they are the master race (can't either, the countries have different ethnicities).

Actually, the Brits are being assfucked by Muslims. So no, not Nazi.

Thats pretty fucked up. It doesn't even make me all pissed off. It makes me sad. Shit like this really brings me down.

I mean, it's just fucked up how people actually think that adding filters to censor out "illegal" content from the intenet is the right thing to do. The kind of people that believe that, are the same people who are responsible for the worst things to ever happen to human beings.

Meh, australia is fucked. The police basically run the whole state, but because everyone hates the way their being treated no1 will sign up to be a cop. I tried to convince my friend he doesnt wanna be a cop, but he's too ignorant and brainwashed by the government to know any better. The government was fine, until kevin rudd came along. He thought he could "stop global warming"(how the fuck can 20 million people stop global warming when theres 6.5billion more?). Internet censorship isnt to protect us(the people), it's to protect the government.

(most) Australians are stupid. They were all brought up to believe the government, to do what it say's, to believe it's always right. Most people over 60 still dont trust the govt, but everyone in between seems to have the ultimate faith in them.

Kevin Rudd will pay dearly for this stupid bill(if it passes)

There's nothing they can do - at least the majority don't complain like fucking American crybabies.

Are you retarded? I would take from your inability to capitalize and your substitution of a number in place of a word that you're probably just some thirteen year old. The police in Australia have no more authority than the police in the United States.

I tried to convince my friend he doesnt wanna be a cop, but he's too ignorant and brainwashed by the government to know any better.

The government doesn't have a single campaign to propagandize citizens into becoming police officers.

The government was fine, until kevin rudd came along. He thought he could "stop global warming"(how the fuck can 20 million people stop global warming when theres 6.5billion more?).

Kevin Rudd never once claimed he could 'stop global warming'.

Internet censorship isnt to protect us(the people), it's to protect the government.

In what way does it protect the government from anything?

(most) Australians are stupid.

Most people are stupid. I wouldn't say that the number of stupid people in Australia is any higher than that of any other country.

They were all brought up to believe the government, to do what it say's, to believe it's always right.

Have you got any proof of this, or is it just a wild conspiracy theory?

Most people over 60 still dont trust the govt, but everyone in between seems to have the ultimate faith in them.

Maybe that's because older people tend to be more conservative while the younger people are more liberal. Those who are over 60 trusted the Howard government...

Kevin Rudd will pay dearly for this stupid bill(if it passes)

It has less of a chance of passing here than the one which was proposed in the US. I can't believe the number of people like you who are stupid enough to entertain the possibility of this bill passing. Common. Fucking. Sense.

Its just a load of shit.

They tried mandatory filtering at the ISP level before, the ISP's told them to get fucked.

Then they started a government campaign to provide people with free net filtering software. They spent 87 million tax payers dollars on it and estimated a user base of about 2 million people and sent out flyers to every household. Eventually about 200k people actually got the software, of that only 25k people used it.

This latest attempt will fail as well.
