Ongoing battles between police and gunmen were reported at two five-star hotels.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades attacked targets including the hotels, a cafe, and a train station, police say.

Maharashtra state government spokesman Bhushan Gagri said 78 people killed and about 200 wounded, while police confirmed 26 deaths.

Among the dead is the head of the Maharashtra state's anti-terror squad, who apparently died in the violent aftermath of the attacks rather than being a target for the killers.

The attacks included five shootouts and two grenade attacks, said a police officer at Mumbai's police control room.

Mumbai police spokesman Satish Katsa said gunmen have taken over the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Oberoi, and were holding hostages on multiple floors.

Earlier, A.N. Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, said his force was still involved with suspected militants at the two five-star hotels.

IBN reported ongoing gun battles at both hotels. At least two explosions were reported at the Taj.

One witness told local reporters gunmen had tried to find people with U.S. or British passports.

IBN, quoting police sources, reported hostages were taken at the two hotels.

The attacks began about 2230 local time (1700 GMT) and more than two hours later witnesses were reporting new explosions and gunfire.

The targets include businesses frequented by international visitors in the city which is India's financial center.

CNN correspondent Andrew Stevens said: "We are getting reports of ongoing incidents at the railway station and the Oberoi Hotel.

"We do not know if this has reached its peak or if more attacks to come."

A local journalist told CNN he had seen evidence of an attack at the city's domestic airport, which is on the outskirts of the Mumbai.

IBN reported explosions at a gas station and inside a taxi on a dockside road.

Attacks were reported at the Taj and Oberoi hotels, the popular Café Leopold, and Cama Hospital, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station.

The Taj hotel is really cool looking, I've never been inside but I have walked around and seen in it from the sea. Sucks that its on fire and blowing up.

I got some friends in Mumbai, but they live on the other side of the city so I'm not too worried.

Bet the media will start throwing "Al-Qaida" everywhere sooner or later. Even though the attack was nothing like an Al-Qaida attack and the Deccan Mujahideen already claimed responsibility.

And i believe the British and US passport thing is also a propaganda lie.
They attacked rich hotels and tourist sites, yet out of the 101 people they've killed, only 6 were foreigners. If they had been targeting Americans, then there would be some dead Americans.

Deccan Mujahideen do not exist, its a cover name for black ops. Eye witnesses have claimed the gunmen were fair skinned, some blonde and certainly not Asian.
We'll never know exactly what's going on but the financial market has been closed down for the time being and I would hazard a guess it has a little something to do with that.

It is a pretty interesting series of occurrences to be sure, Sybil.

There are other sources from Indian newspapers but I have to look after a cat with hypothermia at the moment.

Totse should get together and build two great buildings and play paintball. We will have tons of paint balls but no hoppers so single shot per second or two per second. Lots of grenades, and of course lots of beer. Fuck it would be so much fun. Then well torch it and watch it burn or build wooden planes set them on fire and ram them into the buildings like the twin towers. So much win.

"They did not look Indian, they looked foreign. One of them, I thought, had blonde hair. The other had a punkish hairstyle. They were neatly dressed," says Mr Amir.

Then, the "foreign looking, fair skinned" men, as Mr Mishra remembers them, simply carried on killing.

As quoted from the BBC's coverage.

Would look like the point of it was to strain the relationship between the pakis and the injuns and promote the policies of the opposition BJP for a more western style anti terror movement and development in line with the western ideals of a new world.

Edit: I think I was wrong on BJP front. More likely an international conspiracy  supported by the ruling party INC.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has opened cross-party talks on setting up a federal agency of investigation after the Mumbai attacks.

Prime Minister Singh was speaking at the cross-party meeting in Delhi.
On the agenda are the creation of the new agency and new anti-terror laws.

The attacks have also increased tensions with Pakistan after allegations that the gunmen had Pakistani links.
Islamabad denies any involvement, but India's Deputy Home Minister Shakeel Ahmad told the BBC it was "very clearly established" that all the attackers had been from Pakistan.

Does anyone else find it interesting that the only gunman captured alive also happens to be the only gunman they have clear pictures of?
