I favor the Klingon approach: If you are captured by pirates, consider your life forfeit. The pirates, the prize vessel and the hostages will all be bombed. The problem should correct itself quickly thereafter.

I don't understand why they don't just put something like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CROWS) along the side of each ship. It wouldn't even be all that hard to make. All you need is a gun, a camera, a screen, and a couple of good servos.
