That is pretty creepy. On the other hand, a virus that would infect the entire population without them knowing, then scan for certain images or memory that revealed them to be a rapist or serial killer or terrorist, etc, would be nice. Especially if it's programmed to force them to turn themselves in like the way cordyceps lloydii controls ants.
If I were able to make a virus like that I'd probably be tempted to abuse it, like forcing people to run around screaming "I WANT TO EAT YOUR POOP" and then have them actually search for dog shit and eat it in public. Maybe make some of them drown themselves in toilets.

Be prepared for a future of thought crime. Imagine this thing being done from a long distance. You could be sent to prison just for imagining CP in your head. I swear, we are too smart for our own good so we come up with all this technology that just makes it easier for government to oppress us. My question is what good does this technology really serve? I don't see any practical purpose for this other than for negative use.

If it gets to the point where they can scan for pre-programmed detailed images such as an image of a person's face, then you could scan a suspected murderer's brain for the image of the victim's face. If the expression on the face is varied enough, like if they had a fearful expression, and it was in the killers brain, then that might work better.
But finding the image of a victim's face in the killer's mind is pretty good evidence.
Lie detector tests aren't admissible in all courts, but if they develop these scans enough it'll be pretty damn hard for people to get away with lying. And I'd love to be able to scan the brains of politicians to expose their lies, but naturally they would never be scanned because they usually get away with whatever they want.

Maybe, but the image would have to be very damned hi-res. I'm still not sure I fully understand this technology, since I don't believe that we save images in our brains in any sort of raster format. A suspect of a murder could have a slight image of someone who looks similar to a murder victim in his mind and that would probably be used as evidence, even though it's very questionable. Seems like this is something that could be easily taken advantage of in order to send people to jail among other things. And who knows what else they may be able to see? Does one really want some people prying through their mind only to come across their darkest secrets?

Damn, this is scary. We take another step toward being gods. Do we proceed, or do we retreat for fear of being squashed?

Technology is getting too powerful..people are stupid, AND corruptable, my god, were gonna fuckin die.

Mind evasion techniques like focusing on a static image woud provide some defence.
Although if thinking about goatse man becomes illegal... you'll have to switch to tubgirl.

This is quite interesting, though a bit scary.
I wonder if there's a chance that this technology is actually several years old and perfected but they're letting the public know just now?

They can already put sounds inside your head so you think they are your thoughts.

They day in the next 10 years they images will be more clear and in color.
I wonder what would happen if they use it on people under the influence of psychoactive drugs. I'd love to see what other people see on acid or anything of the sort.

That's the first thing that came to my mind as well. That would be badass, being able to record your trips and save them.

that is fucking... fuck...
this needs to be the most regulated technology ever...
or destroyed... all research destroyed.. all equipment destroyed... all notes destroyed... the memories of the researchers wiped...

Man I hate this type of technology. Thought crimes will be the future. People in power will definitely abuse it.

There's nothing retarded about it. It might be 500 years into the future though, if the human race makes it that far. But stuff like that will be possible in the future.

sorry to dissapoint you guys, but we are nowhere near being able to "see" peoples thoughts or read peoples minds. The imput from your eyes goes directly to your primary visual cortex in the back of your brain via the optic nerves. So basically, there is an array of neurons firing in such a way that it creates an exact copy of what you are seeing, except the "pixels" of the image are made from electrical potentials, which can be recorded by electrodes or an MRI machine
So this technology is really no different then attaching a camera to someones glasses, for example.

this...they're just detecting images from the direct visual input of the subjects' eyes. Scientists don't even know what thought actually is, they just know that when people think certain things or when people are in certain states of mind, certain eletrical and chemical processes happen in the brain. Assuming that thought and mind simply comes down to physical processes in the brain is just that, assuming.
