Introduction

This website is provided as a public service by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a resource and information clearinghouse for those individuals and organizations that have an interest in the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994.

All information provided on this website in the public areas is considered public information and may be distributed or copied, subject to Sections 701 and 709 of Title 18, United States Code, which prohibit the unauthorized use of the FBI seal or the use of the words "Federal Bureau of Investigation," the initials "FBI," or any colorable imitation of these words and initials "in a manner reasonably calculated to convey the impression that such [activity] is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Privacy Act Statement

The FBI uses information from its systems of records, which may include information collected through this website, in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974. The current statement of the FBI's uses of such information is published at 66 Fed. Reg. 33558.

Information Collected and Used

In general, you can visit our website without telling us who you are or revealing any personal information about yourself. There are times, however, when we may need information from you, such as your name and email address, and other personally identifying information. It is our intent to let you know before we collect personal information from you on the Internet.

If you choose to give us personal information via the Internet that we or our authorized contractors may need to correspond with you, process a request, or provide you with additional website access, it is our intent to let you know how we will use such information. If you tell us that you do not wish to have this information used as a basis for further contact with you, we will comply.

If you visit our website to read or download information we automatically collect and store the following information about you:

  • The name of your domain (e.g., "yourcompany.com") and the IP address (a number that is automatically assigned to your computer when you are using the Internet) from which you access our website
  • The type of browser and operating system used to access our website

  • The Internet address of the website from which you linked directly to our website

Information Collected from Email

If you identify yourself by sending us an e-mail containing personal information we will consider that you voluntarily agreed to provide us personally-identifying information. Information collected in this manner may be used for responding to requests for information as well as other authorized purposes.

Security and Intrusion Detection

For security purposes, and to ensure that this resource remains available to all users, all network traffic is monitored in order to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage or conduct criminal activity. To protect the system from unauthorized use and to ensure that the system is functioning properly, individuals using this computer system are subject to having all of their activities monitored and recorded by personnel authorized to do so by the FBI. Anyone using this system expressly consents to such monitoring and is advised that if such monitoring reveals evidence of possible abuse or criminal activity, system personnel may provide the results of such monitoring to appropriate officials. Unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage to this service, are strictly prohibited and may be punishable under applicable federal law.
