Christopher Andrew Phillips turned himself in to the U.S. Secret Service??? Today he was charged with breaking into the school's database and stealing 55,000 records earlier this month. A security flaw in the database's design allowed records to be accessed with only a valid Social Security number. Phillips is thought to have created a program that tried more than 3 million numbers, which resulted in approximately 55,000 records being found. More found

Microsoft changing server licensing They will be changing the licensing scheme on eight Microsoft server products, but not its flagship Windows Server operating system software, according to a company representative. The products will include Microsoft's Application Center 2000, BizTalk Server 2002, Commerce Server 2002, Content Management Server 2002, Host Integration Server 2000, Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000. The announcemount will happen on April 1st 2003 but they say it will not be a April Fools joke. The most major change in the scheme is the changing per processor. For instance in a 4 proceeor server if you are only using 2, you would still eb charged for 4. They are changing it so you can only be charge for what you use. Sounds like it's Microsoft just correcting the mistakes that they have been pulling on Small Businesses. More over

I will blow up the world if I don't get 1 Billion Dollars, er I mean take over linux. SCO is trying to make the world a worse place my saying they own trademark over linux. What happened to SCO, did they just get up? This is nuts that they are trying to sue Big Blue a.k.a. IBM. The 1 Billion lawsuit could end up being a bid for the linux for IBM but in my opinion IBM has spent enough investing a free operating system. They pledged 1 million dollars last year. I remember the GPL license, was that a dream? Read more

Are you feeliing it? CODE RED! No I am not talking about the Mountain Dew. I know you know I like it but this is not about beverages. I was watching logs and it looks like another round of Code Red worm is going around. I just think it is funny that people still run IIS. I think Active Directory is cool in concept but IIS is silly.
AOL spending the cash again on McDonald's but not on Happy MealsFrom the New York Associated Press, McDonalds might soon be seeing WiFi in their restruants. You would be able to 'surf' wirelessly with a purchse of a combo meal. Ten McDonald's in Manhattan will begin offering wireless WiFi, or 802.11b, Internet access on Wednesday, McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa Howard said. 300 more by years end in New York City, Chicago and a yet-unannounced California city. I see this as a cool idea but then again, I eat my lunch at my desk. It would be neat if it was a weekend and I got a phone call and needed a computer but how are they going to control the access. Software based? That would leave out PDA users possibly. MAC address? I could see that being a pair to admin. I am very curious about this plan. I hope to be writing news from a free AP at a McDonald's soon. Read more

Say HI to Deloder, the new network worm.
Yep there is a new worm today. It's called Deloder and it will be hitting a Windows PC near you soon. Look out for the program, the file is DVLDR32.EXE. The worm spreads by scanning random IP addresses, trying to connect on Port 445. Port 445 (Microsoft SMB over TCP/IP) allows outsiders to access Windows file shares. It then tries to obtain a list of computers connected to the same network and attempts to access them using default passwords, as explained in an advisory by Finnish AV specialist F-Secure. Finally, Deloder disables shared network resources and places entries in the Windows Registry of compromised machines to make sure it is always run. This action has the side-effect of disabling network sharing. I love Windows, wonder if I should turn on sharing on the Pocket PC. Read more

So a new magazine is out.I was at a computer fair this weekend and I saw the PC Enthusiast Magazine booth but didn't bother to stop. Probably because I was argueing the price of Compact Flash with a vendor. I saw the magazine in the Free pile at Bordor's bookstore. It's very colorfull, not thick. I thought it was a preview when I looked at it. As I read it at home I started to dislike it. One reason was the TV Card review, who is buying TV cards now-a-days. If I was to buy a TV card it would at least be a HDTV, not a $60 card. Why not review USB TV Tuners instead. One story didn't impress me either. It was about "How to build the Ultimate PC" and turned out to be more of a "How to build a PC" article with intructional pictures. Since it is free I have to expect all the advertisements, but if the magazine is called PC Ethusiast Magazine, shouldn't it be more cutting edge? Check out their website

ICP in Backyard Wrestling Game?Ok, a little off topic but it is a computer video game. I was watching Tech TV's Tech Live and Backyard Wrestling by Eidos was announced. It looked good but what got my attention was the likeness to Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J. Then I heard Murder, Murder. ICP has their music in the video game also. Props to the clowns.

I love the AximI just purchased GPS for the Dell Axim. I looked at many options for the Dell. Tech TV reviewed one GPS made by Pharos. Voice commands and good display. I did some searches for good prices and availablility. I found the Pharos specifically for the Axim sold by Tiger Direct. It was $219, which was the lowest price I have seen for Pocket PC GPS at the time. The cool thing about this GPS for me is that I will be using this in the car and that is what it is made for. It connects to the serial port, leaving both the CF and SD slots open for memory. The maps will take up some memory. About 16mb per region. I have a 128 SD card and I was able to copy all of South California and Las Vegas. The Pharos GPS unit came with an antenna/receiver and the software. The reciever mounts on your dash against the windshield making use of a suction cup (velcro could have been better). The receiver has two connctions, one to the bottom of the Axim and one to the lighter jack in the automobile. The cool suprise that I saw was the Axim is being charged while using this GPS reciever. This meant I only needed one lighter plug to power my GPS/Axim. Things that you will realize, is that this is not a portable GPS. You won't be able to go hiking with this GPS unit.
The operation was pretty smooth. I did have some complaints. First is loading of the files that you are going need your journey. This takes some time is you are going to do it though the sync cable. You are better off transfering to CF or CD. I put this in my car and with the PDA mounting with the included vent mount. It took 3 or so minutes to aquire the satelites but I am attributing the problem to the marine layer here at the beach. It could also give you a little more warning before turns. It will give you step by step directions to destinations. It can calculate new routes. I could see it being a pain on long trips since you have to load maps ahead of time. I mapped a tripfrom LA to Las Vegas and I have to preload by hand 5 maps. This is a fun toy and the software is pretty good compared to most Pocket PC software. Tiger direct also sells the CF version of this GPS for $199.
